How to improve your public speaking? Read on. Ignore if uninterested.

Anshuman, you can't speak to save your life.

It stung. But I was that bad back then. These words are from 1987. I was in High School and was a candidate for School Head Boy.

The selection panel, made up of top teachers, told me that the role needed speaking to create influence and get work done, and I had ZERO speaking skills.

And the rebuke was in public. Over 100 students were in the hall when I was told to leave the race. I was out of the race before the start line itself.

It is 2023 now, about 35 years since this incident. Two things happened that day:

- I was hurt. Deeply hurt

- I knew there was only one way up. Work hard and become worthy.

I have been at it since the mid-1980s. Improving my public speaking.

And the outcome is not too bad. I am still a work in progress and will always be.

I have delivered hundreds of sessions and tried to get better all the time. I am now able to speak confidently or at least pretend to be confident. I am now able to speak without too much preparation. I have addressed large gatherings of 1000+ audience and done well. And I know I can get better.

But this story is not about WHO. It is about HOW. How did I get better?

How did I work on my skills? The why was clear. The what and how wasn't.

I did not have much guidance but I observed really well. And that helped. I learned from watching other speakers, preparing my talk, rehearsing but leaving space for improvisation as well, and taking every opportunity to speak that I got.

Most skills are built in public.

You don't become a sub 2 hr Half Marathoner by watching YouTube videos or reading books.

You don't become a smashing public speaker by thinking about it or listening to recordings.

You are built in public.

And we all need a coach

It’s only putting ourselves out there and choosing to grow instead of feeling embrassed and shying away that can bring about the change! A valuable session for many :)
