How to Improve your Home Workspace or Office

How to Improve your Home Workspace or Office

Ever since working from home became a reality during the start of the pandemic, people worldwide have realized the importance of transforming their workspace to replicate their existing office or to create an environment for maximum performance and productivity.

As employers are offering fully remote or hybrid work patterns, many want to take the time to invest and make their workspace comfortable and professional (especially for all of the video calls and virtual meetings that still go on!)

Here are some tips on how to improve your workspace so that you are operating to your maximum capacity.

  1. Have a designated work space

Even while at home, balance is important to separate the line between your job and professional life. Designate a space in your home that is strictly reserved for your job (meaning avoid areas like your kitchen or living room). Make sure you set up a desk, a comfortable chair, and a table that holds all of your desktop devices and monitors.? When you are done with your work, shut off all of your work-related devices and leave that space until you have to log on for the next time. This way you are not blurring the lines between your professional and personal lives and you have time to excel in both.

2. Make sure you are moving

It is easy to get complacent and lazy while being at home. Many people are opting for desk treadmills or standing desks to get exercise and their steps in during their work days. Make sure your work space gives you the chance to take breaks and re-energize every hour. If that’s not possible, actively schedule 30 minutes to go out for a walk or for a workout.

3. Keep it professional?

At the beginning of the pandemic, it was certainly cute when virtual meetings had surprise visitors like babies, pets or spouses. However, it is important to keep your workspace professional and free of distractions or too personal decor. Avoid posters or decor with strong political messages or backgrounds with personal photos of your family. Keep your space clean, minimal, and professional - you never know who is on the other side of the screen.

4. Have the appropriate gadgets around?

So maybe your PlayStation 5 doesn’t belong in your workspace, but a charging mat or a high-powered desk lamp do. In our current technologically advanced world, it is overwhelming to figure out what is necessary and what is an aesthetic addition. Avoid gadgets that will be a hindrance to your productivity.
