How to Improve Your ChatGPT Prompts

During our #AI and #ITSM webinar with Mark Hinkle I asked ChatGPT how to improve prompts, and here is the reply: (and there are some great examples!)
1. Be Specific and Clear:
Example: Instead of asking, "Tell me about AI in ITSM," ask, "How is AI currently being used to improve incident management in ITSM?"
2. Provide Context:
Example: If your question relates to a specific aspect or situation, provide context. "In the context of a mid-sized company's IT department, how can ChatGPT enhance knowledge management?"
3. Break Down Complex Questions:
Example: Instead of a broad question like, "What are all the ways AI can help in ITSM?" break it down into parts: "How can AI assist in incident management within ITSM?" followed by "What role can AI play in change management?"
4. Specify the Format or Style:
Example: If you need a list, a step-by-step guide, or an explanation, specify that. "Can you provide a step-by-step guide on integrating ChatGPT with a self-service ITSM portal?"
5. Use Comparative Questions:
Example: Ask for comparisons to understand pros and cons. "How does ChatGPT compare with traditional chatbots in handling IT support queries?"
6. Ask for Examples or Case Studies:
Example: "Can you provide examples of how companies have successfully implemented AI in their ITSM processes?"
7. Request for Future Predictions or Trends:
Example: "What are the emerging trends in AI that could impact ITSM in the next five years?"

8. Combine Related Questions:
Example: If you have related questions, combine them for a comprehensive answer. "How does AI improve incident management and what are its limitations in ITSM?"
9. Clarify the Scope:
Example: Specify if you want information focused on a particular industry or size of the organization. "How can small businesses leverage AI in ITSM compared to large enterprises?"
10. Iterative Refinement:
Example: After receiving an answer, refine your question based on the response. "You mentioned automated incident management, can you explain how predictive analytics plays a role in this?"
11. Request Actionable Insights:
Example: "What are the first three steps an IT department should take to integrate ChatGPT into their existing ITSM framework?"
Example Transformations:
Original Prompt: "Tell me about AI in ITSM."
Improved Prompt: "How can AI enhance incident management and change management processes in ITSM for a mid-sized enterprise?"
Original Prompt: "What are ChatGPT's impacts on ITSM?"
Improved Prompt: "List the top 5 ways ChatGPT can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of IT support desks."
By refining your prompts in these ways, you can guide ChatGPT to provide more accurate, detailed, and useful responses tailored to your specific needs.

6 个月Very helpful, Lisa. The big differences that I see (compared to doing a traditional web search) are: indicating a role, providing context, specifying output format, and using the output of one prompt as an input to a follow on prompt that refines the request.
