How to improve your Business English with a mindful body language ??
Hi from Vera,
Let me ask this: how can you make the greatest impact when speaking English during a meeting, presentation or speech?
I'm sure most of you would respond this way:
"Vera, if I manage to boost my vocabulary and practice speaking English more, I am confident I can nail it!".
Well, sorry to break the news to you but the above can account to no more than 30% of your entire communication. What does that mean?
It means that even if your level is high (as close to native as possible), your vocabulary is rich, your listening &?speaking skills are sharp, and you feel good about it, you will only achieve maximum 30% of your communication goal.
In simple words, working on your "hard" English skills (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, listening, speaking, to name a few), you will still need to work on something else that accounts for (mark my words) MOST of the impact.
That's your non-verbal communication. We are talking about body language.
Furthermore, infusing mindfulness into that mix can significantly increase the chances of nailing your communication in English (verbal and non-verbal).
"True, but working on my body language doesn't feel like working on my English. I feel it's out of scope, Vera!?" Read on for the answer!
Body language is key
Let me repeat the numbers: 70 to 93% of your communication is non-verbal.?
There is no chance of being irrelevant.
On the contrary, body language gives your more ways to get your message across with your posture, facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, and tone of voice.
Words will do their job, but, in addition, your body language will enable you to express your emotions, intentions, and attitudes.
It's syncing your rational side (the words you use) with your emotional side (your emotions).
The next step, one that can elevate your performance when speaking English at work or beyond, is to put body language and mindfulness into the blender.
That's where the most amazing things happen: a mindful body language.

Mindfulness can boost the awareness of your body, and how you can use it to signal all the right things, while?leading a meeting in English, delivering a presentation, or making a crucial speech.
How to develop a mindful body languagenbsp;
Mindfulness can help you sync your mind + heart + body to create a beautiful mix of your mental powers, emotional expressions, and physical presence.
3-in-1, in a way. Not only can mindfulness make you more aware of your body (and sync that with your message) but it can also help you?understand your audience or the people you talk to, and how all that affects how you and they feel, think and behave.
Keep in mind that communication is a two-way interaction; 'it's not just you doing the talking.
So, here you are! These are the Top-3 ways to develop a mindful body language
1. Observe your body reaction? & correct any mismatch. Mindfulness is about being present and observing with no judgement. You can use that to understand how you are feeling when speaking English at work, how that negatively affects your body language, and what you can do to fix it. For example, you may notice you are fidgeting before going?on stage for that presentation or even during your meeting. You are tapping your foot and?drumming your fingers. That's OK; most people experience it. Observing that behavior can help you come to terms with it, instead of trying to hide it.
2. Adjust your body behavior to match your mood or goal. If you need to feel more confident, a more open and upright posture can work wonders. If you also need to show empathy to the person you are talking to?at some point, simply lean in and nod along with them. See?
3. Understand the?body language of other people & adapt to it. Being?mindful can help you identify the body language patterns and signals of the other people in the room, and become more empathetic. Mindfulness can make you less judgemental and more attentive to others (that's super important during negotiations in English). Instead of being driven by false assumptions or prejudice, you switch to a more mindful mindset?of asking questions and offering support. That's what I?call win-win communication, and you will definitely get more bonus points for engaging in that.
