How to improve material management for?#Turnarounds

  • Dedicate Focal for TA material management in Preparation team organization
  • Ensure material availability and quality (by OEM)
  • Tag & bag, palletize & move near to equipment before execution
  • Before Pre-TA: Evaluate material commitments and if not it should be a Go/No Go “Stage Approval” to announce TA or postpone TA until availability of must have items
  • 1 TA in EU extended up-to 30% because of failed supplier commitment in TA
  • Near Pre TA , conduct risk assessment for all the materials which are unavailable considering the scenario “ what if “ it is not delivered fully (overhaul or refurbish existing items)
  • Enlist all the unavailable material and sent to stake holders for risk assessment to have their buy in for the mitigations
  • Summarize material according to delivery date i.e. Over Due , critical and others
  • Over due is the material which has already crossed its due delivery date from the supplier and it is rare to deliver although supplier is swearing that it will come
  • Critical delivery material is the material whose delivery is close to Pre TA dates and if not available it shall be difficult to replace

I am used to do a discovery work study in the disciplines, mech, electricity & instruments where you look at what happened at the previous Turnaround and then forecast an intended material need.

How many 3 " 150 # gate valves need to be at site in addition to those already booked for discowery work orders ?

Another issue is contract that can be nice to already have in place, just in case.

Fore example, what is the risk that a tube in a furnace must be replaced, if it is considered large, you should consider having negotiate a contract already before and if necessary activating the contract.

It is always cheaper to have a pipe or valve too much in place, flying in stock costs many times more.

"Those who plan do better than those who do not plan even though they rarely stick to their plan"?Winston Churchill.

Yan Parlindungan (HSE Supervisor - at KSORKA Renewables) added "Much be better if we can share TA plan for one year for example to procurement and logistics team then they can help TA team to mitigate which parts long lead item, fast moving, etc. Availability parts can be determine from the beginning this means can help TA team to choose and execute TA tasks properly. "

Usman Mustafa Syed, IAM Cert, CAMA, CMM, CRL said "Many times, things that would otherwise won't be procured due to Management controls are ordered under the pretext of TA material. E.g. consumables; that never really get consumed during the TA."
