How to Improve Equity in Long-Term Care: A Caregiver's Suggestions

Connecting companies, careers & communities for good
Regarding long-term care (LTC), we must recognize that not everyone has the same access to or quality of care. It's time to shake things up and make equity a priority. I see plenty of opportunities for policymakers to partner with healthcare insurers.
With my mom now needing constant assistance, I've become acutely aware of the burden that caring for aging parents can be for families. Here are a few suggestions from my side of caregiving:
Get the Data Straight
First things first: we need to know who is getting left behind. Collecting and breaking down data by demographics can help us pinpoint disparities. Community needs assessments are critical—they show us what different neighborhoods truly need regarding LTC.
Boost Medicaid and Support Programs
Let's face it: Medicaid is a lifeline for many. Expanding coverage and benefits can make a huge difference for low-income folks. Plus, we should fund programs that give families the support they need, like respite care and training, especially in underrepresented communities.
Make Care Culturally Competent
We all come from different backgrounds, and our care should reflect that. Training LTC providers on cultural competence can help ensure that everyone feels understood and respected. And let's not forget about language services—offering translation and interpretation is a must.
Champion Community-Based Solutions
Home and community-based services (HCBS) are the way to go! Let's invest in options that allow people to receive care at home instead of in a facility. Supporting aging in place means people can stay in their communities longer, which is crucial for their well-being.

Develop a Diverse Workforce
A diverse workforce isn't just nice to have; it's essential. We need to recruit people who reflect the communities they serve. Ongoing training focusing on equity will ensure that staff have the tools to provide the best care possible.
Advocate for Change
Your voice matters! Partner with advocacy groups and community organizations to push for laws that tackle systemic inequalities in LTC. Engage stakeholders and ensure those affected are part of the conversation?
Make Resources Accessible
How about setting up community resource centers that provide information and support for navigating LTC options? Improving access to technology can also help underserved populations access telehealth services.
Address Social Determinants of Health
Let's think bigger than just healthcare. Tackling social determinants like housing and transportation is crucial for overall health. If we want people to thrive, we must support them in all aspects of their lives.
Listen and Adapt
Feedback is vital. Create ways for communities to share their thoughts and experiences with LTC services. This ongoing dialogue will help us continuously improve and adapt to their needs.
Invest in Research and Innovation
Finally, we need to fund research focused on equity in LTC. Let's find out what works best and share those insights widely.
By taking these steps, we can make long-term care more equitable for everyone. It's not just about policy; it's about people—and we can do better together. Let's commit to creating a system that truly serves all members of our communities.
