How Important is Steering of Roaming to the Internet of things?

A few weeks ago ROCCO published it's Steering of Roaming Vendor Performance Report 2018 where we took the opportunity to ask the MNOs who rated the Vendors about the Internet of Things and Steering of Roaming.
This years report was different since we're all more aware that the Internet of Things device numbers are already matching and exceeding those of consumer sims in the domestic network.
Roaming things may soon roam with greater frequency than consumer roaming devices. So it was imperative to get Mobile Operators views on the status about whether Steering of Roaming solutions would be impacted by IoT.
We asked an optional question on IoT and SoR: “How important is Roaming Steering for Internet of Things?” Some MNOs told us their thoughts on IoT and Steering.
“In roaming, IoT devices are equally as important as normal subscribers”
“You can’t use the outdated Roaming processes and systems we have today for IoT, these devices can be life threatening if hacked into or steered in the way we steer consumers, steering has been best endeavours not absolute”
“Heavy impact - need for fully flexible steering based on customer contract and customer-specific device dependent steering”
“We are looking for more advanced systems than what we see on the market today, I fear we will be inventing something for ourselves and that will take a lot of time”

6 年Steering will be much more important for IOT devices because of the variety of balance of quality versus cost requirements. Some applications require high bandwidth for a relatively low value service. Others require close to zero actual bandwidth but deliver high value. You need to be able to optimise your choice of service for each. Indeed the ability to do so may be a primary determinant in whether you are profitable or not in IOT. You may also want a highly dynamic system to take advantage of emergent dynamic pricing policies i.e network based steering not SIM
