HOW IMPORTANT IS LUCK IN OUR SUCCESS?
FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN MOST REALIZE.
Hello readers,
As we celebrate St. Patrick's Day this month, we thought it would be fitting to examine the relationship between luck and success in our March newsletter. Upon further investigation, we have come to realize that luck plays a much more significant role in our lives than we may have previously thought and hard work matters!
If you're curious about the true origins of St. Patrick's Day, you can find an informative article on the subject here:
Moving forward, we will explore the concept of luck in relation to business research, as well as some of the insights I have gained on the subject.
Business Research
According to recent business research, luck has played a crucial role in the success of many of the leaders featured in popular books such as In Search of Excellence, Good to Great, and Built to Last. Conversely, bad luck has been cited as a significant factor in the failures of some of these same leaders.
For more information on this topic, you can refer to this HBR article:
It's important to note that even if we were to replicate all the strategies and tactics used by these successful companies, we would still be unable to replicate the role of luck in their success. Factors such as timing and chance occurrences cannot be fully accounted for.
So, if we're looking for role models to emulate, the article suggests looking to those who are not at the very top of their field. Successes in lower tiers are often more dependent on merit than on luck.
"We are all a great deal luckier than we realize; we usually get what we want - or near enough.”
- Roald Dahl
Wisdom Traditions
I believe that offering training and education in the areas of self-awareness, leadership, and effective organizational management can greatly contribute to our collective progress. This belief is further substantiated by an insightful article in Scientific American that explores the significant role of luck in achieving success:
By providing individuals with the tools and knowledge to hone their leadership and organizational skills, we can work towards creating a more informed and capable workforce. Additionally, increasing self-awareness can help individuals better navigate their personal and professional lives, leading to greater success and fulfillment. This in turn can positively impact our society as a whole.
"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
- Seneca
Practical Know-How
"I have had lots of luck in my career but there has also been a lot of hard work.”
- Maria Sharapova
It's been shown that practice can actually make us luckier, but it's important that the practice is deliberate and persistent. Acquiring competence through practice is key to increasing our chances of success. However, I believe that it's equally important to find joy and meaning in what we do - this can be seen as a form of luck in and of itself.
Furthermore, doing things for others can also create positive luck in our lives. Acts of kindness and generosity can lead to unexpected opportunities and outcomes, which can in turn contribute to our personal success.
In conclusion, luck and opportunity play a much more significant role in our individual success than many of us realize. When we find ourselves feeling like our lives aren't going according to plan, it's important to consider the role of luck and the circumstances that have brought us to where we are today - including where and when we were born. We should also remember to cultivate a sense of gratitude for the miracle of our existence and the opportunities that come our way.
