How to import Excel Data to MS Access existing table without over writing the heading Field?

I have received this question quite more often than anything else in MS Access.

I had experimented with different ways to directly import but nothing worked except one tweak! However, I'm concluding my observations and findings on this matter as follows.

  • Since MS Access chooses to match the Field of Excel Sheet, it is not possible to import without over writing.
  • However, it will not overwrite any additional Field of MS Access which is not matching with the Excel Sheet.
  • It will keep the field as blank data if there is no corresponding Column in excel.

SOLUTION

  • Select the Excel data column wise, Go to Home in MS Access - paste - Paste Append.
  • Even if the data base is big, you may select the data column wise. You need to keep one column extra if it is auto generated unique id. If your primary key/ unique id is your custom one, you can directly copy.
  • Copy append column wise (from Excel) will help you to copy the data without copying the column heading.

Hope this helps !
