Part 1 of 2 (you can read part 2 here ), we covered the implementation of Supply Chain digital twins, this is part 2 of the series. In the final part 3, we will discuss how to integrate a supply chain digital twin with a control tower.
The purpose of a Supply Chain control tower put simplistically is to monitor the flow of goods through an organization’s supply chain. Data is the fuel, the control tower pulls in data from across the organization’s supply chain, data sources like supplier inventories, manufacturing schedules, shipment locations, weather forecasts, and even real-time updates from sensors on trucks and containers, this data is then funneled into the control tower then analyzed in real-time.
They are usually powered by advanced technologies like AI and machine learning, the control tower processes the data to provide you with actionable insights. It can highlight potential disruptions, predict inventory shortages, and even recommend corrective actions. For example, if a storm might delay a shipment, the tower can suggest rerouting it or adjusting production schedules to minimize the impact.
The control tower acts as a central hub for communication and collaboration. It gives different teams across the organization, like procurement, operations, logistics, distribution, and even customer service, a shared view of the supply chain and allows them to make decisions quickly and efficiently.
Unlike, but similar to a supply chain digital twin which tells you what is happening and why, a supply chain control tower advises or gives actionable insights on the options, or courses of action of what to do about it to key stakeholders. They can be used together,?with the digital twin - being a duplicate providing insights and the control tower taking action, hence the term “control tower”.
While the precise origins of supply chain control towers aren't a singular event with a single "inventor," their development unfolded over time, influenced by evolving technological capabilities and industry needs.
The seeds were planted in the 1990s when logistics managers felt the need for better visibility and control over shipments, operations, and costs. Some early concepts focused on logistics control towers for specific areas like transportation or warehousing.
In the 2000s. Advancements in data integration and software technology paved the way for more comprehensive "command centers" that pulled data from various systems and trading partners. These provided broader visibility but relied on manual processes and point solutions.
In the 2010s the rise of cloud computing, big data analytics, and real-time tracking technologies like GPS revolutionized control towers. Data silos broke down, allowing for end-to-end visibility and real-time insights. AI and machine learning further boosted their capabilities with predictive analytics and automated actions.
From the mid-2010s to the present day, modern control towers have become sophisticated platforms. They offer integrated dashboards, digital playbooks for proactive response, and even collaboration tools for seamless communication across internal and external stakeholders.
This scenario applies to existing control towers built before the full-scale adoption of AI. In these cases, AI capabilities are added later as an enhancement or "bolt-on" feature.
Implementation:?AI modules are plugged into the existing software infrastructure.?This can involve separate systems for data extraction,?AI processing,?and integrating insights into the control tower interface.
Use cases:?Add-on AI typically focuses on specific tasks like;
o??? Demand forecasting:?Using historical data and external factors to predict future demand and optimize inventory levels.
o??? Anomaly detection:?Identifying unusual patterns in data that might indicate potential disruptions or fraudulent activity.
o??? Route optimization:?Suggesting the most efficient transportation paths based on real-time traffic,?weather,?and cost factors.
o??? Limitations:?Add-on solutions can be less integrated and seamless.?Data silos can persist,?and manual intervention might be needed to translate AI insights into actionable decisions.
o??? Benefits:?Even as an add-on,?AI can significantly improve existing control tower capabilities and provide valuable insights.?It offers a cost-effective entry point for organizations not ready for full-blown AI integration.
Modern control towers are increasingly built with AI at their core, in this scenario, AI is not just an add-on; it's the foundational principle shaping the entire platform.
Design:?The control tower architecture revolves around continuous data collection,?real-time processing using AI algorithms,?and automated response mechanisms.
Use cases:?AI capabilities are deeply integrated across all aspects of the control tower,?including;
o??? End-to-end visibility:?AI gathers and analyzes data from all supply chain stages,?including supplier networks,?production facilities,?and logistics operations.
o??? Predictive analytics:?AI anticipates disruptions,?identifies potential bottlenecks and recommends proactive actions to mitigate risks.

Embedded AI leads to a highly responsive,?agile,?and resilient supply chain.?It can improve efficiency,?reduce costs,?and boost customer satisfaction through faster delivery times and increased order accuracy.
When it comes to choosing the right approach, the decision between add-on AI and embedded solutions depends on various factors, including an existing control tower infrastructure, budget, and desired level of AI integration. For organizations with older control towers:?Add-on AI can be a good starting point to test the benefits of AI and gain some valuable insights.
For organizations building new control towers or planning significant upgrades,?investing in an AI-embedded platform could offer long-term advantages in terms of performance, scalability, and future-proofing supply chains.
Ultimately, the key is to leverage AI in a way that optimizes the organization’s specific supply chain needs and drives measurable results that justify the expense from an ROI perspective.
