I have yet to come across anyone who says “ I want to work in a toxic organization”.
When a company is registered, its pretty neutral – no employees, no culture. So the culture build up once operations start . Humans are SOCIAL ANIMALS and, like our ancestors- the apes, we ape the people around us. Of these people , the maximum weightage is given to the way leaders behave – as any group behaviour specialist will tell you. Yes, we ape the behavior of our leaders and peers.
Thus, recruiting the people with the RIGHT culture fitment becomes very important – and there is no one model of Culture which works for everyone. Thus, if you focus on Integrity, Honesty, Transparency – you need people who can GIVE and TAKE the same. Yes, they have the maturity to ACCEPT and PRACTICE both sides of the coin.
The TOXIC people are those who can do only ONE side of the coin – e.g., they can be Honest with you, but you cannot be Honest with them – as they cannot ACCEPT the same behavior that they follow! These people have negative impact on their team mates – and confusing too. There are many words for Toxic Behaviours - Gaslighting , Humiliating , Isolating ,Stonewalling , Threatening, Blame shifting, Forcing dependence etc.
