When you speak to someone in leadership position and if they show they are important then you are talking to a MANAGER. However, if the person makes you feel important then you are talking to a LEADER.
There are 7 main qualities of a Leader:
VISION: "Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion." - Jack Welch
COURAGE: "Courage is rightly considered the foremost of the virtues, for upon it, all other depend" - Winston Churchil
HUMILITY: "The more you can contain your ego, the more realistic you are about your problems. You learn how to listen, and admit that you don't know all the answers." - Larry Bossidy
STRATEGIC PLANNING: "Strategy is not the consequence of planning, its the starting point." - Henry Mintzberg
INTEGRITY: "With Integrity, you have nothing to fear, since you have nothing to hide. With integrity, you will do the right thing, so you will have no guilt." - Zig Ziglar
FOCUS: "Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past success rather than the present failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get closer to their goals." - Jack Canfield
COOPERATION: "If your imagination leads you to understand how quickly people grant your requests when those requests appeal to their self-interest, you can have practically anything you go after." - Napoleon Hill
An interesting post. To know a leader necessitates knowing that they possess these particular traits, and being able to assess them between other leaders and determine who are and are not leaders. The following questions might indicate where I'm having difficulty, and taking integrity as an example: How do I have integrity? How do I know I have sufficient integrity to be deemed a leader? How do you know that I actually have integrity? How do I know you actually have integrity? How do we know that another leader actually has integrity? The same, or similar, questions could be applied to each of the aspects you mention. I'd be interested in your responses to the above questions. For example, how you determine that you, or anyone else, has sufficient integrity to be deemed a leader?
