How I use (and don’t) use ChatGPT for my job interviews

AI is everywhere. From recommending what you should eat to what you think, it has become too common.

However, there are still job openings for writers, designers and other creative fields. Which means AI cannot DO IT ALL!

I was recommended to use AI to write my resume and cover letters as it was easy and helped in meeting the demands of the ATS software. However, that put me in trouble. It made changes in many places that I lost my voice. The resume had my name, but it wasn’t mine any more!

So I rejected the idea and started using ChatGPT in a way that it would improve me and my performance and not show off its ‘trailblazer skills’ (I’m done with these AI words already).

Step 1: For reviewing

I gave the job description and my resume and prompted it to review my resume to check if I had met the demands required for the job. It gave me an idea of what I have included and didn’t.

Step 2: Proofreading

While writing cover letters, I prompted it to check for any errors that missed my eye. I also asked it to review if the tone was appropriate. Strictly no re-writing was a prompt too!

Step 3: Preparing for interviews

This is my secret sauce which has helped me immensely during interviews and client meetings. On the previous day or a few hours ahead of the meeting, I gave some details about the interviewer and the company along with my resume and work portfolio. Now, I asked ChatGPT to represent that company and assume myself as the candidate. It was prompted to ask some questions assuming itself to be the interviewer. We did it for more than 15 minutes. Once the mock interview was done, it gave me some feedback on my answers. This helped in reducing my fear, become more clear on my thoughts and answers and also have a practice session at the comfort of my home.

These steps have helped me in using ChatGPT more effectively than making it do the job. I believe that it should be used in a way that improves us rather than making us lazy to think or do our things. If we let that happen, I don’t think it would be a surprise if it replaces us.

I love this! We have the same beliefs about how chatbots should be. used. I have an article that basically says 'don't let the bot write your entire piece of crap!' I'm also into doing unique things. Kathy aka GPT refers to me as Steve, unless I respond Kat to which she responds Steve. I can't wait until it does improve it's memory as rumored. I want to wipe out my custom instructions. Here's an article where I've trained Karen aka Gemini to mimic an author I love: https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/i-like-write-rob-steve-kozy-huyuf/?trackingId=KW7rxh8BQSKKGMY4%2F49%2FfA%3D%3D

Glad I'm not the only one who dislikes ChatGPT's vocabulary. I can spot an AI written text from miles off if it is unedited. It's a tool to be used, and not a replacement for a lack of creativity and skill in creating compelling text. I've been using it this week like a database. For example, "give me 5 historical examples on the importance of keeping promises". I could probably do this research myself, but it would take much longer. Then I took what Chat GPT suggested and created the text myself.
