How I Turned Uber Rides Into $1 Million in Revenue

(read time: 3 minutes)

Hey there,

Sometimes, the most unconventional ideas yield the most extraordinary results. Let me take you back to the early days of my entrepreneurial journey, when a simple, everyday action became the catalyst for something much bigger!

Back in Flintstop’s early days, we were bootstrapped, hustling, and looking for every possible way to grow. That’s when a Uber Pool ride gave me my first big lead—a casual chat turned into exchanging contacts.

That lead? It became my first client from this unique “marketing experiment.”

Just stick around for a few more minutes, and you’ll understand how this turned into $1 Million. ??

I had to travel from Prabhadevi to Lower Parel often, and Uber Pool was my go-to.

Now, being a quintessential Gujarati businessman, I always believed:

Money saved = Money earned.

So, while Uber Pool saved me cash, it also turned out to be the perfect platform for networking.

How?

Well, Lower Parel is the hub of all corporates, and most of the people pooling had similar drop locations. I realized I had two choices during these rides.

Type A: Put on my headphones, listen to my music, and zone out.

Type B: The person I naturally am—chatty, curious, and ready to strike up conversations with strangers.

I chose to be Type B. And that one choice turned casual chats into sales opportunities.

And guess what? People responded! Either out of curiosity or courtesy, the conversation kept flowing.

One thing led to another, and soon, with every conversation, I’d hand over my striking yellow visiting card—bright, bold, and impossible to miss.

And if that wasn’t enough, I’d also gift them a quirky vada pav paperweight from Flintstop.

That’s too hard to forget, isn’t it?

The Power of Face-to-Face Conversations

Let me break it down:

  • 200 working days a year
  • 2 Uber Pool rides a day (home to office, office to home)
  • 2-3 co-passengers per ride

This meant I had at least 400+ meaningful interactions a year. Even with just a 1% conversion rate, I was closing about 8 deals annually, with an average ticket size of $6,000. That’s $50,000 in sales, just from casual conversations.

Without Uber Pool, reaching these decision-makers (like marketing and purchase managers) would’ve been a much longer process—think LinkedIn filters, cold calls, and multiple follow-ups. ??

But here, trust-building had already begun face-to-face, making the sales process much smoother. The decision maker already had my card in hand!

Scaling the Experiment

Encouraged by the results, I got my entire sales team to start using Uber Pool.

We had 20+ Uber conversations daily, turning simple interactions into valuable leads.

By the end of Year 1, these rides brought in $300,000 in sales.

By Year 2, we crossed $1 million! ??

Turns out, the backseat of an Uber can be a goldmine.

Here’s what this taught me:

  • If you don’t speak, nobody listens. Next time you’re in a shared space, strike up a conversation. You never know who you’re sitting next to — it could be your next client, partner, or even a life changing opportunity waiting to happen!
  • Build connections authentically. Genuine interest in people often opens doors that a scripted sales pitch never will. Remember that.
  • Small actions compound. A few conversations each day can lead to massive results over time, and I say this with personal experiences.
  • Look beyond conventional strategies. Sometimes, the best opportunities come from unexpected places.

So, next time you’re in any shared space—be it a café, a coworking space, or even a casual meetup—be open to conversations.

Who knows—it might just be the beginning of your next big deal.

What’s the most unconventional strategy that’s worked for your business? Let me know—I’d love to hear your story!
