How I Try Seizing Opportunity

How I Try Seizing Opportunity

There has been a lot of discourse on seizing opportunity. Making sure you take the chances that come in front of you and make the best of them.

But I think one area that is not talked about enough is actually creating opportunities. Because while some part of opportunities themselves might be random or luck-based, you inherently have an ability to skew factors to your side and allow yourself to be presented with them.

But what does that mean practically?

I can only speak to the ways that I have tried to do this in my own life.

1. Move to Wherever Presents the Most Opportunity

If America is the “Land of Opportunity”, I truly believe being in SF for startup founders is equivalent to being at Rome at the height of its power.

It’s the network, the collection of talent and the opportunities you will never get to see if you are not here.

There is a lot to be said about the city itself and lifestyle, but there is no place like it in terms of opportunity.

You can succeed anywhere in the world and success is never guaranteed anywhere.

However, putting yourself in a place with successful, ambitious people drastically helps your odds. And if your main goal is to experience success then it is a no-brainer.

Any time I go out to an event, I always leave meeting super ambitious interesting people.

As someone who thrives on vibes and being part of that type of environment is the kind of serendipity that makes SF special to me.

I wrote more extensively about this in a previous article which you can check out here:?

2. Get in a Room with a Bunch of Smart, Ambitious people

I wholeheartedly believe that the best innovation happens when you get smart people in a room and get them talking.

It’s how you get ideas that lead to billion-dollar companies, lead to the revolution of countries and make a mark on history as we know it. Ideas and innovation spur opportunities for those who meet the right people and can ride the wave.

But how can you get in that room?

How could I talk to great founders and ambitious people excelling in their fields?

There are many events available hosted by some amazing people. I would highly recommend checking those out.

I decided to help facilitate those conversations and directly or indirectly, help spur opportunity for both myself and others.?

If you are seeking opportunity yourself, come out to a Founders Brew Mixer.

3. Make Your Ideas Public

A couple years ago, I started writing articles on Medium and LinkedIn because I wanted to have interesting conversations around technology with people other than my friends.

I wanted to get their thoughts around some of the ideas I had been toying with. I didn’t know it at the time but this would lead to some amazing opportunities that I would’ve never gotten otherwise.

It’s made me realize that you never really know who is reading what you write.

You don’t know who completely resonates with your idea and wants to explore it more.

And you will never really know unless you take the leap and put those ideas out.

In my early days on LinkedIn, as with many other social creators, I used to look into performance metrics of posts. See what posts performed, didn’t perform, take down posts as needed and go the whole nine yards.

Nowadays, I just put my ideas out and leave it there regardless of performance. You never know who is reading.

Regardless of the performance and the amount of people you think are reading, you never know who might see it and how it might lead to an amazing opportunity.

4. Leverage, Leverage, Leverage

All opportunities aren’t created equally. There are only so many available to you on the ground level.

But we live in a very interesting time.

A time where the communication gap between the middle and upper class has been significantly reduced.

Where people in the middle class can get access to the exact same resources and infrastructure that giants use to build themselves.

Where opportunities have been disseminating down more than ever before.

That makes it imperative for people to take advantage and leverage these opportunities. Use those opportunities to get even more greater and better opportunities.

I worked hard in finding jobs and networking like a mad man to finally leverage that to get my gig at Tesla. To this day, I still leverage that gig at Tesla to get chats in places I have no right being in.

The way I see it, you need to take what you have and keep using it to keep climbing higher.

I wrote a whole article where I dive deep into the concept of leverage which you can read here:?

These are my 4 main pillars that I try creating and seizing opportunities around me.

I am not sure how it will work or whether I will end up seeing success but I do know I have gotten more opportunities doing these things than I could’ve imagined.

And for me that is a big deal.
