How I taught math and Python to high school girls on a Friday ??

Yesterday, I had an online class for a group of high school girls who wanted to study math and programming. They were from a private school that offered extra courses on Fridays for those who wanted to pursue a math major next year. I was supposed to teach them about integrals, derivatives, functions, and variance, and also show them some Python code that could solve linear equations.

I started the class with a brief introduction and then moved on to the math topics. I explained the concepts and gave some examples. I also shared a handout with them that had some exercises and formulas. Then, I switched to Python and showed them how to write a simple program that could find the roots of a quadratic equation.

Everything was going well until I heard a loud voice in the background. It was the mother of one of the students, who had forgotten to mute her microphone. She was yelling at her daughter to go and buy some bread because they had run out of it. She said something like “Curse you! Go and buy some bread! We have nothing to eat! Reza won’t go! He’s just a big donkey! Tell him to go! I have a class on math!”

The girl tried to calm her mother down and said “OK, OK, I’ll go. But why on Friday? And look at this poor teacher who has come to teach us this nonsense on a Friday.” The mother said “I don’t know. Maybe he has nothing better to do. Now go and hurry up!”

I was shocked and embarrassed by what I heard. I didn’t know what to say or do. I pretended that I didn’t hear anything and continued with the class. But I could feel that the other students were laughing at me and the situation.

I finished the class as quickly as I could and ended the session. I felt sorry for myself and for the girl who had to deal with her mother’s nagging. I wondered why I had agreed to teach this class on a Friday when I could have done something more fun or relaxing.

But then I remembered that I loved math and programming and that I wanted to share my passion with others. Maybe some of the girls in the class would appreciate what I taught them and would pursue their dreams in these fields. Maybe they would become successful mathematicians or programmers in the future.

I decided to look at the bright side and not let this incident ruin my mood. I told myself that it was just a funny story that I could laugh about later. And maybe write about it on LinkedIn ??
