How I ‘stumbled’ into the education sector - MABECS Consultant, Vincent Kwang

I was once a lost teenager. Back then, I had no idea what these were: Foundation, A-Level, UEC, STPM… let alone courses like CIMP or even the American Degree Transfer program. I had never imagined myself in the education sector as a consultant. Yet, here I am today, celebrating eight years in the education sector.

I was a Marketing and Public Relations graduate who stumbled upon a chance to join the education sector. At that time, I did receive lucrative offers from banks and a pharmaceutical company. However, what made me gravitate towards the education sector was the nature of the job. I also recalled how I applied to university through the assistance of education agents, and how they played a part in my journey. I figured it would be great if I could offer a helping hand to students who wish to apply to university.?

Using my own experience, I understand how it is like to stand at the crossroads of your life, where you have to decide what the next step is - whether it be a job or higher education. All of these feelings can be very intimidating. That’s why I’m always willing to spend extra time explaining things in detail to my students. I realised the importance of an education consultant in the journey of a student going to university.?

The job satisfaction comes from seeing the growth of the students. From the first conversation with the students to seeing them graduate, that feeling is irreplaceable. Some of the students that I have consulted, have even stayed in touch till now and one has become one of my closest friends. I believe this is something very difficult to find in other industries.?

This job also allows me to travel to different countries and universities, so that we can experience what life would be like for our students when they study abroad. It also gives us a chance to relay first-hand experiences to our students prior to their travels so that they are well-prepared before they leave.?

Recently, having completed my Masters in Strategic Marketing, it is fascinating to learn how the industry has evolved from the time when I was a student to what it is today. I personally think that this industry deserves more attention and acknowledgement from people. The industry has evolved to be more tech-savvy, as compared to the old days when we still heavily relied on paper forms and hardcopy brochures. Now, everything is digitized and so much more convenient, although I strongly believe an element of human touch is key to success.?

I’m very glad that the worst of COVID-19 is over now, anything that deters physical interaction poses a great challenge to the industry. Let’s embrace the fact that we are able to travel and interact with people again!?

My big celebration will be when I reach a decade in the industry, hopefully I can assist more students to realize their dreams in the near future.
