At first It Was Just for Fun
When I first started developing my skills as a photographer, I pursued projects that intertwined with my passions. I have always loved the outdoors, road trips, and discovering new ways of looking at the world, so I gravitated towards a local photography club in Johannesburg called "The Joburg Photowalkers." This eclectic group of photographers gave me the opportunity to observe how more experienced photographers approach their shots, sparking my own contemplation of personal style. My most memorable outing was visiting the Chinese New Year’s celebrations at the Nan Hua Temple, just east of Pretoria.
Then Things Got a Bit Serious
During this formative period, I spent much of my free time dancing salsa and organizing a monthly party in the lively Braamfontein neighborhood of inner-city Johannesburg. At first, I took photos to promote the event, but I soon realized that dancers cherished images that captured the joy they felt on the dance floor. Focusing on what I could control, I leveraged my understanding of salsa rhythm and culture to navigate the dance floor with precision, positioning myself to capture impactful photos.
Photographing these salsa parties became a valuable learning experience, allowing me to hone my skills in event, people, and flash photography. With each party, my abilities improved, and it wasn’t long before I secured my first paying clients—drawn to the energy and emotion I captured in my salsa photos.
