How I scaled motherhood & career without assistance!

How I scaled motherhood & career without assistance!

Mums can you recall that feeling of being at working yet ready for that call that your child need your attention in school. The dread that your boss might just have to let you go because you've taken a lot of time off work to address some genuinely pressing family matters. Or that day when the nanny calls you early in the morning that she will no longer stay because she needed to return home to take care of her sick parent and you had to cancel your work to manage the home, put things in order just for that day. The list goes on as that was my case many years ago.

Being a mum and choosing to grow the career you love can be such a price especially when your children are still very young and dependent. You shove the fear of them getting mishandled in your absence where you can only return home when they had gone to bed. I became entirely redeemed when I chose to retire to working remotely and it had paid off for so many years and as God will have it, the pandemic and lock down made many more companies accept this model to the benefit of their staffs. What a time to be a Tech mum?

4 years ago, when it became obvious to me that a lot of women in my circle were going through that same thing that I had been through, it began to boil in my heart to lend my experience in whatever way I could just to help them see the possibilities of having the two ends of being financially free and still make it to all their kids school events. Even then I wasn't ready to share so much because it felt like testing a new rejoin of #career, #coaching and #mentorship. I wasn't ready for it so after a short while it (passion) all died down.

Nevertheless, whatever God has placed in your heart, you may choose to overlook but not the tugging in your mind because the problems won't go away by themselves.

Shortly after I had my twin boys, it dawned on me that I won't be able to leave my house as often as I wanted, not even to find a job...but THAT wasn't going to be me. For every minute I had spent those days drowning myself with Zee World series, I felt lost in self-disgust, consuming and not earning till that faithful day. By then I had stopped attending a fashion school, but I could still design logos, ad flyers and tags with my laptop. I got skill I could sell for a pay.?

I made that single call to my trainer. "Do you have any of your students that need tags, logos or flyers? I am open to receive jobs." Within a week I had served 2 clients, sent international jobs printed across the world, made a 70% of my last working monthly salary. Calls began to come in like no man's business.

Then the new challenge was how to balance taking care of my 3-month-old little princes, my family and my new set of jobs. Since I had no home assistance (Nanny) I had to be the playmate, mummy and more while delivery deadlines were ticking away. You can imagine the physical and mental engagement.

I would lay on my belly, surround myself with toys ensure my laptop is at armlength in a safe distance, the I'll let them play around and over me while I click away design projects. I won!

This became our play mode till they got to school age. I then began to take more courses in Brand Identity Design, Product Design, Instructional designs and more that I can't the number of courses I've taken, events I've spoken at or the number of times someone has called me to say I inspired her.

The journey may be that daunting but the grace of God, and the mind being healthily focus on result will always find a way to make you scale.

Today, I can look back and smile at those days. I now take it upon myself to help young mums, get an even better options to enjoying a fulfilling family/career life because I didn't give up.
