How I plunged the whole country into darkness!

How I plunged the whole country into darkness!

One fine evening, I attempted to change the water heater switch. I called two electricians and they were both out of reach. So I did what any other “hero without superpowers” would have done. I switched off the mains, unscrewed the switch, took a photo of how the cables were connected (just incase). Removed the broken switch and replaced it with the new one, all cables went in exactly where they were (or so I thought).

I switched on the mains, my “test” light was on in the toilet. The moment of truth, i held my breath as I turned on the newly installed switch. The light went off! It was at this moment that i knew… i should have waited for the electrician.Went back to the main switch and I realised it is still on, but no electricity is coming through. I thought it must be the building power exchange box (it has happened before). It wasn’t!

A few minutes of scrolling through social media, The Kenya Power and Lighting Company apologises to the public over a Nationwide outage! I confirmed my worst fears! My switch plunged the whole country into darkness!

I spent the next hour thinking of how I will be paraded in court and charged with billions of Kenya shillings worth of losses. This was a worse scandal than Brother Pattni’s Goldenberg scandal! What will I say to the BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera and Viu-Sasa?

I could just imagine some of the headlines they would be running. “KPLC Bans a man from living within 100 km of the electricity Grid”?!

Then the much awaited news headlines appeared after what seemed like 10 hours. A monkey had tripped the power grid. To be honest, I wasn’t even interested to know the monkey was changing a heater switch too, I was just glad “it wasn’t me!”. (Could almost hear Shaggy’s song in my head).

Now here is the lesson. Most times we tell ourselves a lot of negative stuff. Our minds are shrouded with worry and self defeat. We know there is such a thing called positive thinking however when you flick a switch and the whole country goes dark, it is hard for you to think of monkeys. However what you tell yourself may end up cultivating a fixed mindset.

So forget the “lived happily ever after”, this is not a fairy tale. Can you believe I wrote this whole article just to say I am reading a book called Mindset? Then again, this is based on a true story. Movies normally claim no animals were harmed during the re-enactment of the true story. To be honest I sill don’t know if no monkeys were harmed during the tripping of the country grid! (Animal rights guys, talk to Kenya Power)

What I do know however is if I told my friends what I normally tell myself (at times), i would have no friends!?

Like right now I’m thinking how many people would read this and have absolutely no reaction! Not even a like or share!? So tell me, do you some times hold negative thoughts about yourself, how do you deal with it? Lets hear from you in the comments section :)

You know what I am thinking now??

First- I laughed a lot! Second- I am the queen of telling myself negative things. It’s really a constant battle. Even Nadia Ahmed has told me numerous times. Hebu pass the book after you have read! Maybe I need to read it!

Woow, Mohamed Gharib I like how you have creatively taken me though a mindset lesson with humour and a story that I can relate with. Looks like you and I have ‘messed the grid’ but here we are. Let’s keep flipping the mindset switch.
