How I Learned Something New By Listening

3 days ago I posted on LinkedIn.
The post prompted someone in my network to send me a message.
He told me about a rep that was crushing it.
I asked for an introduction.
This small moment led to an hour-long conversation.
He talked about his desire to learn more and grow.
I asked him how he learns and grows.
“I reach out to people that are beating me or my team and ask for help.”
“People love to be asked questions and be asked for help.”
He’d write down what he learned.
Then he’d run experiments to see if he could improve.
He was proud but never satisfied with his success.
That’s how he became a top performer.
He told me about his desire to pass down what he learned to his team.
“It doesn’t matter how many things I can sell. It’s about how many people can I promote.”
It was inspiring.
This small exchange made me regret every time I've heard about a smart person and didn't ask for an introduction.
It all started with a simple question, “Would you be open to making an introduction?"
That's how easy it is to open yourself up to a new learning experience.
The key to growth is being curious.
Yet most of us don’t do this. We bury ourselves in books, blogs, podcasts and feeds.
We often forget that learning is about listening.
Next time you hear about a smart person, ask “Would you be open to making an introduction?”

4 年A bit like the old saying : "We have two ears and only one mouth ...." Sometimes we are so focused on what we are going to say next and when we are going to get our turn to speak, that we 'hear but aren't always listening' Listening and learning is a great skill that allows us to grow, and I like how Johann Aceron-McLean was truly listening !

4 年Excellent article. You are right. We do bury ourselves too much in the academics of our sales profession. I spent much time in the past listening to real people. You have inspired me to recalibrate. Even a 40 year veteran can learn! Thank you

4 年Josh, thanks for sharing. Reminds me of a note from Mamba Mentality that I keep in my back pocket, "I was curious. I wanted to improve, learn, and fill my head with the history game. No matter who I was with-- a coach, hall of famer, teammate-- and no matter the situation-- game, practice, vacation-- I would fire away with questions after question. A lot of people appreciated my curiosity and passion. They appreciated that I wasn't just asking to ask, I was genuinely thirsty to hear their answers and glean new info. Some people, meanwhile, were less understanding and gracious. That was fine with me. My approach always was that I'd rather risk embarrassment now than be embarrassed later, when I've won zero titles." #kobe?#mambamentality?
