Baby bro is watching TV.
Mom is under the covers and is resting at the moment.
It's sunny — 60 degrees here in New York.
Let's talk about how I learned to listen.
------------------------------
One of the customers on the phone told me this last month:
"You're not listening."
And then I recovered the call by saying this:
"I apologize. How can I assist you?"
It can happen at any time.
Here's how I learned to listen:
1. I take notes on a piece of paper.
Both sides.
It's old school.
It works well.
You can repeat what someone told you over the phone.
It shows you paid attention.
You may be thinking:
What if you are speaking in person?
Try to get the most out of the words said and nod your head.
2. Look for a subtitle or CC button on TV/video.
When I was a teenager, I turned on Closed Caption on the TV.
Since it was a challenge to hear, Closed Captioned made it easier.
It's a must for people who want to learn.
Or understand the words said on the screen.
You listen with a different mindset.
3. By practicing how to show active listening.
Ask questions.
You want to understand the message.
You can repeat the last few words.
Pause.
Give the person time to speak.
I've gotten better.
And there is room to improve.
My gym teacher in elementary school said this:
"Listening is to learning as legs they are to walking."

P.S. I'm open to improvement. Any listening tips you can share?

1 个月I really liked your first point. Taking notes on a piece of paper. I think I have to do it. One of things I often do while listening is I ask questions. A lot of questions. It helps me to understand more.

1 个月Listening tips, as far as I know you must let the person finish his talking or sentence and then speak and not to interrupt.

1 个月Give the person time to speak. ?? This is so important. I grew in a place where people speak at the same time so we listen and speak. I've learned that it is better to just listen without talking, without interrupting, and without thinking of what I am going to say next...I still need to get better, but I know that I am not where I was.
