How I Landed My First Marketing Job

Are you curious about how I started my journey in marketing? Well, let me take you back to when I was just a 16-year-old girl passionate about graphic and web design.

You may also wonder how I developed my passion for graphic and web design. Funny story, it all started with BlackPlanet.com. ?? For those unfamiliar, BlackPlanet.com is an African-American social networking site.

I was fascinated by profiles with great graphics and a completely different aesthetic. I wanted to know how they were created. Much like an individual with an engineering mind who may take something apart to understand how it works, I needed to know what made these profiles work.

After some research, I learned that HTML and Javascript powered the unique profiles. ?? Then I needed to know where these amazing graphics came from. That's when I learned that people used software such Paintshop Pro and Adobe Photoshop. I began to learn as much as I could about HTML to the point that I was teaching my teacher things when I took a web design class in my senior year of high school. I played in Photoshop and made many terrible graphics ????♀?, but I eventually refined my craft. ????

At the time, I wanted a career that would allow me to express my creativity and make a difference in the world.?

Little did I know a chance encounter at a job fair years later would set me on a path to discover my true calling. There, I met a recruiter from a credit union who saw something in me beyond my lack of marketing experience. He recognized my transferable skills and took a chance on me, ultimately creating a marketing role just for me.

From that moment on, I was hooked. I may not have fully understood the power of marketing at the time, but over the years, I've come to appreciate its ability to connect businesses with their customers and shape the world around us. ????????

Now, with over 13 years of experience under my belt, I've had the opportunity to work in various industries and help them craft messages that resonate with their audiences. I also owe it to marketing for helping me grow not only professionally but personally as well.

Looking back on my journey, I'm grateful for the recruiter who took a chance on me and everyone who said yes to help me explore the world of marketing.
