How I knew I looked as bad as I felt...

In her youth, my mother was a photographer, and, as I got older and we started looking at photographs together, she would tell me to look into the eyes of the person in the photograph because their eyes would tell you how they were feeling about the photographer.

Were they trusting or nervous of them? Did they like or dislike them? Did they have a rapport with them or find them a little strange? What do you think the girl in the photograph thought of the photographer?

It's a great game to play and can easily be translated into real life.

I was very low at the end of last year. I felt flat and sad and had no desire to do anything. I noticed that no-one gave me any compliments (which was hardly to be expected), but when I looked at their eyes, I could see that they were slightly horrified (in the nicest possible way) by the sight of me. I could tell by their eyes that I looked how I felt – depleted.

So far 2020 has been different. I am happier. I’m getting compliments – not many, but enough – and I feel loved, which I didn’t for much of the last half of last year. I can even see in the eyes of others that they’re pleased to see me – a real change from 2019.

It’s horrible to feel so lost and sad, so what did I do to turn things around? I counted my many blessings…

  • My husband is an amazing support always.
  • My dog protects and loves me.
  • And LifeClubs makes me feel useful.

But, most importantly, I made a plan for the year – if not the next few years. We’ve been creating a series of workshops, Connect, to connect participants to themselves, to the others in the group and to their organisation or community.

It’s exciting and has given me a focus. It’s brought me back to life – hooray! Do come and join us if you ever want a focus. It may take time, but it’s what we’re good at.

And the little girl, what did you think she thought of the photographer? I reckon she was a little unsure.

Really interesting reflections. It's very true that what we feel in the inside shines on the outside. May 2020 be awesome.

Ahh, Nina, you're a fantastic soul. So sorry to hear that you were feeling that way. x
