The past year, I explored many viral marketing strategies and tested countless methods, but none of them went viral. My target audience is Sri Lankan people, so I created videos in the Sinhala language, specifically targeting Gen-Z.

Creating viral content on TikTok requires a mix of creativity, strategy, and understanding your audience. Here are some key elements to focus on to make your TikTok go viral:
1. Understand Your Audience:
Knowing your target audience is crucial. Research what resonates with them, what kind of content they engage with, and the trends they follow. For instance, Gen-Z in Sri Lanka may prefer content in the Sinhala language, featuring local culture, humor, or relatable situations.
2. Stay on Top of Trends:
TikTok thrives on trends. Participating in popular challenges, using trending hashtags, and incorporating trending sounds can significantly boost your chances of going viral. Keep an eye on the “For You” page to see what’s trending and how you can creatively adapt these trends to fit your style.
3. Create High-Quality Content:
While TikTok is known for its casual vibe, quality still matters. Ensure your videos are well-lit, clear, and edited neatly. Use engaging visuals, and catchy music, and ensure your content is visually appealing from the first second.
4. Be Authentic and Relatable:
Authenticity is key on TikTok. Share personal stories, be genuine, and show your true self. Relatable content that resonates emotionally with viewers tends to get shared more, increasing your chances of going viral.
5. Optimize Video Length:
Shorter videos tend to perform better on TikTok. Keep your videos concise and to the point. Aim for a length of 15 to 30 seconds to maintain viewer interest and increase the likelihood of your video being watched in full.
6. Use Hashtags Strategically:
Hashtags are essential for discoverability on TikTok. Use a mix of trending hashtags, niche-specific hashtags, and general popular hashtags to broaden your reach. For example, use hashtags like #ViralMarketing, #HowToGoViral, and #SinhalaTikTok to target specific audiences.
7. Engage with Your Audience:
Respond to comments, participate in duets, and engage with other users’ content. Building a community and interacting with your followers can boost your visibility and increase engagement on your videos.
8. Post Consistently:
Consistency is key to maintaining and growing your audience. Develop a posting schedule and stick to it. Regularly posting new content keeps your audience engaged and increases your chances of creating viral content.

How to make viral content - TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, etc.
I researched extensively to understand how to create a viral TikTok. I listed a bunch of viral videos and categorized them from A to Z. Then, I sorted them by comments, views, and likes. Finally, I discovered a pattern that consistently succeeded. Also, watch 100+ YouTube/Linked-in content to learn Viral marketing.
Initially, I saw a lot of videos about dancing, cooking, and ASMR. However, these videos often did not get views. Some had zero views, while others had millions. This inconsistency led me to keep them in a separate list. Through my research, I found some interesting topics. Now, I’m going to reveal my exact plan. Keep following me and like this after you read the full article.
I found that short-form content related to conspiracy theories that confused people often went viral. Sometimes, viewers debunk these theories in the comments within the first minute.
Golden Tip number 1 from my experience: If you want to go viral easily, create something people know, but present it incorrectly or differently. For example, I created a video about clocks . I showed that 12 + 1 = 13, 11 + 2 = 13, and so on. It’s not rocket science, but it's a familiar concept presented in a different way. I checked if anyone in Sri Lanka had done this topic before; they hadn't. So, I created the video, and it went viral in 24 hours with 750K views. You can check it on my TikTok.
Golden Tip number 2: Don’t make videos randomly. Consider your background, background music, and script to match your content type. I create videos to confuse people, so I use a black-and-white filter and add motion blur. This stands out among the colorful videos on TikTok, giving viewers a sense of peace. This visual difference catches their attention. For background music, I choose calm and mysterious tunes. This combination of visual and auditory cues engages the brain, making viewers stop and watch the video.
Conversations Between Brain, Eyes, and Ears: When viewers scroll past vibrant videos and see my black-and-white, motion-blurred video, their eyes send a command to the brain, saying, "Please stop, I found my inner peace." This is the first challenge to overcome. Then, the calm and mysterious background music captures their ears, which tells the brain, "Is that horror? Check this out; something strange is happening in this video." Now, the brain receives signals from both eyes and ears, prompting it to process this valuable content and decide whether to engage.
Golden Tip number 3: Be mindful of the intro. I don’t use crazy mind-blowing effects. Instead, I place text near my mouth in the video. The brain looks for highlighted things first. I put the text “Why isn’t it 13 on the clock?”. This sparks curiosity because it presents something familiar in an unfamiliar way. The brain then engages with the content.
Here's a simple breakdown of my script:
Golden Tip number 4: Create a script that confuses viewers. Start with a question like, “Do you know?”. Check all my videos; I always start with a question. Then, I follow with a compelling phrase, like, “Actually, the watch is not only for telling the time. There is another story in these numbers.” In the first 5 seconds, the brain decides to watch at least half of the video. I keep the punch line secret for the next 25 seconds, building engagement and providing information. Speak in an exciting tone to keep viewers interested. Halfway through, I reveal the punch line: “Also, people are scared of 13; there’s no 13th floor in buildings, and popular hotels don’t have room number 13.” This delivers the confusion part of the video.
Golden Tip number 5: If you execute the first tip correctly, you’ll see results. People start to think and comment. They might question if there are buildings with a 13th floor or share their experiences related to the number 13. Some may even Google it or discuss it with friends. These comments and interactions signal to the algorithm that your content is engaging. Social media platforms thrive on attention, so engaging content gets promoted, reaching a wider audience.
The algorithm first shows your video to people interested in similar topics. If they engage, it extends the reach to a broader audience. This is how the algorithm works: by building engagement and keeping viewers on the platform.
