How I got 10% better sleep with one lifestyle change

How I got 10% better sleep with one lifestyle change

"Sleep is an investment in the energy you need to be effective tomorrow." — Tom Roth

I'm officially over a month into my year of no alcohol and I wanted to share with you my first finding… better sleep! For the last couple of years I've tracked my sleep, adjusted my night routine, tested room temperatures, tried a white noise machine and none of these have had as great of an impact as alcohol. From Dec 10, 2022 - Jan 10, 2023 my average sleep score was 87. Not a bad sleep score, but I didn't want to settle for a B in class either. This year, from Dec 10, 2023 - Jan 10, 2024, my average sleep score was 97. A full 10 points higher! While I know this isn't a perfect study, it's still telling. Similar to the previous year, I traveled during the holidays, ate the food I wanted, stayed up too late, etc. The biggest factor that I changed was no alcohol.

Here are my two sleep scores for the data nerds like me. The biggest change I've noticed is my deep sleep, which are the inner rings (red is bad, blue is great).

(note: my apple watch died on Dec 31st 2023, 30%, so I excluded it from the data).?

Not only does the data tell me I'm sleeping better, but so does my body. I'm waking up earlier than I ever have with more energy. I knew alcohol hurt sleep, but I was shocked to see a full 10% bump in my sleep score.

To hear more about why I decided to go a year without alcohol, check out my previous post, https://www.anturascoaching.com/post/365-days-of-no-drinking

What's one thing you can do this month to improve your sleep?

I am 9 months into the same journey. Originally set out with the intention of doing away with alcohol for one year, and have since made the decision to eliminate it permanently. I’ve seen so many benefits, physically, mentally, emotionally.. I wish you the best of luck!!
