How I Engineered My Own Luck: 5 Critical Success Criteria

Welcome to Working from Aum - my amalgamation of actionable insights and practical guidance to help you live as a leader - inside and outside of the workplace.

I've always felt a surge of annoyance when people say to me, "You're so lucky." Last year, I finally came to understand why I felt that annoyance. I realized that luck isn't something that just happened to me - it's something I engineered and built into my life. Through lots of trial and error, I discovered 5 critical success criteria that have fundamentally transformed my life. These aren't just abstract concepts - they are actionable strategies that anyone can implement. Let's dive into each of the 5 principles so I can show you how they can change your life too.

1. Show Up More Than You Skip

Consistency is your secret weapon. It's the foundation of trust, credibility, and excellence. Whether it's showing up at the gym, making it to all your meetings, or being there for your loved ones, your presence matters. Sure, skipping out might give you a quick break, but the real magic happens when you consistently show up. It's about building resilience and showing dedication. Make it a habit to be present, and watch how your reliability paves the way for incredible opportunities and growth. This is the path to establishing your credibility, authority, and influence as a leader.

2. Create More Than You Consume

In today's world of constant consumption, creation stands out as the game-changer. It's not merely about adding to the chaos, but about creating signal amid the noise. Whether through writing, designing, coding, or innovating, creation offers purpose and fulfillment. By shifting focus from passive consumption to active contribution, we not only distinguish ourselves but also leave a lasting impact on the world. Embracing creation as a way of life invites us to nurture our creative potential and inspire others to do the same. In prioritizing creation over consumption, we become beacons of innovation, shaping a future defined by our contributions.

3. Invest More Than You Spend

Think beyond immediate gratification. Instead of blowing your money on things that don't last, focus on investments that build long-term wealth. This isn't just about financial investments like stocks or real estate; it's about investing in yourself—your education, your health, your relationships. These are the areas that yield the greatest returns over time. Adopt an investment mindset, and you'll create a future filled with freedom and security, rather than one dictated by fleeting pleasures.

4. Pay It Forward More Than You Indulge

Generosity creates a powerful ripple effect. When you pay it forward, you inspire others to do the same, creating a cycle of positivity and support. Indulging might feel good in the moment, but helping others brings lasting joy and a deeper sense of connection. Look for ways to give back, whether it's through mentorship, volunteering, or simply lending a hand. By focusing on giving more than you take, you build a community that lifts everyone up - including yourself.

5. Congratulate More Than You Compare

It's easy to get caught up in comparison, especially in the age of social media. But comparison breeds negativity and dissatisfaction. Instead, choose to celebrate others' successes. When you congratulate others, you shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance. It strengthens your relationships and fosters a positive community. Embrace a culture of shared success, and you'll find that recognizing others' achievements not only feels good but also encourages your own growth and happiness.

Your Whole Life Changes When You Give More Than You Take

These principles boil down to one simple truth: giving is transformative. When you show up, create, invest, pay it forward, and congratulate more than you compare, you build a life of abundance, peace, and fulfillment. These shifts may seem small, but their impact is profound and the results compound over time. Embrace them, and watch as your relationships deepen, opportunities expand, and your sense of purpose flourishes. Giving more than you take isn't just a strategy - it's a powerful way of living that brings richer rewards than you ever thought possible.

I believe luck is a product of the work that we put in. The amount of work put in is directly proportional to the 'luck' we invite.
