How I ended up in the Ecommerce and Digital Marketing Industry

A friend recently asked me, "How did you become an eCommerce manager and digital marketing specialist?"

As I reflected on this question, countless experiences came to mind—each one leading to the next, shaping my journey.

It all started back in 2019. I created a simple blog on Wix (you can check it out here: Depression - Meaning, Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment). At the time, I had no custom domain, just the free version. I’ve always enjoyed writing and thought it would be fun to put my thoughts out there.

Before Wix, I used to write long posts on Facebook, structured like articles. This was around May of 2019, while I was still working as a computer tutor and hadn’t fully explored the digital world.

Then, in November of that year, I was approached to join an eCommerce startup. At first, the idea didn’t seem that exciting, but I decided to give it a try.

Without any prior experience in eCommerce or digital marketing, I started teaching myself. I attended webinars, watched YouTube tutorials, read books and eBooks, and even took short online courses from Google and other providers.

Within three months, I had set up my first eCommerce website (www.marginseye.com) using Shopify. It was a steep learning curve, but I enjoyed it because it introduced me to new concepts and challenges. I even shared one of my toughest moments in a previous article—when the website crashed around midnight!(You might want to read this for a hearty laugh)

Through that startup, I gained practical knowledge in areas like website building with Shopify, product research, keyword optimization, SEO, SEM, marketing strategies (both inbound and outbound), and tools like Google Analytics, Search Console, and CRM platforms. I also learned about email marketing and how to maintain website health.

It’s impossible to list everything I’ve learned, but the process was incredibly rewarding. I later moved on to building websites with WordPress, creating four content websites and another eCommerce store.

Looking back, my journey has been full of challenges and growth. I’m grateful I took the leap, and today, I feel confident in my expertise, having faced and solved many real-world problems in the digital marketing field.
