How I do all my 9 to 5 work in just 2 hours

How I do all my 9 to 5 work in just 2 hours

I've worked in IT at several companies with many different people.

Actually, only a few people I worked with in the office were super productive.

But that was more the exception than the rule.

Office walls are like chains that bind your potential and drag you down into the depths of routine.

...

Here's how it works:

1. Start of the day: You arrive at work charged up, but the first hour is spent drinking coffee and chatting. Maybe even smoking a cigarette. It's like lighting a fire that immediately goes out.

2. Mid-morning: You try to work, but after an hour, it's break time again. Someone is constantly bothering you, or you distract yourself with social media. The energy you spent focusing just evaporates like gasoline leaking from a punctured tank.

3. Lunch: You recharge, but that energy quickly disappears like a soap bubble. You come back from lunch and again need to "ramp up" to get back into the work rhythm.

4. Afternoon: Your brain screams for a break, but you have to work. You're already exhausted, but the workday is not over. You try to focus, but fatigue and coffee breaks kill all productivity.

5. End of the workday: You go home broken and tired, as if you've run a marathon, but in reality, you've just been fighting windmills all day. All you can do is collapse on the couch.

6. Weekend: Instead of working on personal projects or studying, you recharge because the workweek has drained all your energy. You're like a battery that needs recharging.

The office turns your life into an endless cycle of exhaustion, recovery, and repetition.

If you don't break this chain, your future and career will be shackled on the altar of routine.

Such a life not only kills your career, it kills your desire to create, to innovate, to move forward.

This path I see is true for 90% of engineers, mainly Trainee-Junior-Middle positions.

Why do you need that shitty office if it's just a den of distractions?

You were in the office for 9 damn hours, but only did about 2 hours' worth of valuable work.

And you're tired because you're constantly distracted and trying to refocus.

I know people who have worked in this mode for decades, and it's very scary.

It's the same as in a car: gasoline is used the most at start-up, but when you're driving on the highway, it's minimal.

When I started to feel this strongly, I increasingly moved away from offices and preferred coworking spaces.

Now my regimen looks like this:

  • I never go to the office anymore and won't go, I work in a coworking space or at home.
  • I plan everything I need to do for today.
  • All the work I can do myself (and that's 90% of it) - I do in Deep Work mode.
  • I set a timer for 2-3 hours, turn off everything that can distract me, and completely do my plan.

Here are 2 main points that really changed my life:

Work from home or in a coworking space.

You can work from home and set up a work corner, and it will be hundreds of times more productive because you control the environment and situation around you.

I often choose coworking because of the incredible true working atmosphere. People come there to create value, not to chat like in an office

Start practicing Deep Work

Deep work is the most important skill of 2024, shaping your entire future.

Simply put, it's the process of entering a flow state for several hours, where it's just you and your task, and nothing else. In a state of flow, we always do the greatest things in this world.

At first, I could only do 20-30 minutes per session, and no more because my body couldn't handle it and wanted to be distracted.

But every day I trained my focus, and my performance increased.

Now I easily spend 3 hours every morning in a state of flow and 2 hours every evening, and in these 5 hours, I do more than I used to in 2-3 days.

Do the following, and your life will change within a few months:

  • Plan for next week to start with 30-40 minutes of deep work sessions every day (ideally in the morning).
  • When you start - turn off your smartphone or switch it to do not disturb mode.
  • Create a quiet, calm environment for yourself where you know you won't be distracted.
  • Spend 30-40 minutes in this mode every day for a week.
  • At the end of the week, analyze and write me a DM with your results.

In a week, you can already feel strong changes. Moreover, this is not only applicable to engineers. I use the same approach now when working with LinkedIn, when creating content.

Here's how your life will change if you ditch the office and switch to Deep Work:

  1. Initially, when you get rid of constant distractions and coffee breaks, you'll feel as if you've taken a heavy backpack off your shoulders. This is the first step towards big changes.
  2. Your thinking will begin to change. Instead of being scattered over trivialities, it will become focused and sharp as a blade. You'll start to feel sharper in the moment, more present. Your work will become not just tasks to be done, but real projects with defined goals.
  3. Thanks to Deep Work, you'll do the work in a few hours instead of all day. This will free up time for personal life, for creativity, for relaxation. On weekends, you won't be lying around exhausted, like a dead fly. You'll have more energy, more desire to create something.
  4. In six months, when you start using this freed-up time to develop your own projects, you'll build something meaningful. Maybe it'll be a new business that not only adds to your income but also brings satisfaction from self-realization.
  5. Your relationships with loved ones will improve because you'll spend more time with them, not with colleagues during coffee breaks. Love, friendship, family ties—all will become stronger because you'll be investing real, quality energy into them.

Thus, leaving the office and switching to Deep Work will not just change your work, they will change your entire life.

You'll become the master of your time, your resources, and your opportunities. This is the path to the freedom you deserve.
