How I Conquered Heavy Workloads: Personal Tips for Thriving Under Pressure

By Andrew Howard | Head of Audiences, Marketing and Sales Blackpool Grand Theatre

In today’s fast-paced work environment, managing a heavy workload is a challenge many of my professional colleagues and friends face. The continual pressure to meet deadlines, juggle multiple projects, and maintain productivity can lead to stress and ultimately burnout. It’s essential to find strategies that not only help us manage our tasks but also maintain our well-being in the process.

Understanding the Impact of Workload

A heavy workload can have profound effects on both your mental and physical health. It can lead to decreased job satisfaction, diminished performance, and increased stress levels. Therefore, adopting effective coping mechanisms in work and in your personal time is crucial for sustaining productivity and maintaining a positive work environment.

Don't let your thoughts take over!

My Recommendations ‘Key Coping Mechanisms’

1. Prioritise and Plan: Break your tasks into manageable pieces. Use tools like project management software (Monday.com is what I use) to organise your workload effectively.

“Prioritisation is about recognising what truly matters and focusing your energy there.”

2. Set Realistic Goals: Understand your limits and set achievable goals. This not only helps in managing expectations but also reduces feelings of being overwhelmed.

3. Embrace Time Management Techniques: Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique can enhance focus and productivity. Work for 25 minutes and take a 5-minute break to recharge. The technique is designed to help you focus, reduce distractions, and avoid burnout.

“You might find this odd, but I have a timer on my desk, if I'm giving myself 20 minutes on something, that’s what it gets. It also helps me understand how valuable time is. My colleagues know that the time we have is valuable if you want to present something to me ‘get to the point’, what do you need from me or clearance on.”

4. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing, can significantly reduce stress levels and improve concentration.

“Myself, I have horses, we have deliberately housed them in the countryside so that after work, we grab our dogs and get that break to go out to somewhere with great fresh air and decompress. Just enjoy nature.”

5. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to communicate with your team or manager about your workload. Collaborative environments can foster support and shared responsibility.

6. Take Regular Breaks: Short breaks can boost overall productivity. Stepping away from your desk for a few minutes allows your mind to refresh and can lead to more creative solutions. Discreet Exercises you can do at your desk (seriously!)

7. Maintain Work-Life Balance: Set boundaries for your work hours. Protecting your personal time is essential for long-term productivity and mental health.

“This is something sometimes (like many of you I expect) I struggle with. Here are 5 best practices to set boundaries between work and personal life that everyone knows, but few of us follow.

8. Learn to Say No: It’s okay to decline additional responsibilities when your plate is already full.

“Knowing your limits is key to maintaining productivity and mental clarity.”

9. Leverage Technology: Utilise digital tools and applications that can streamline tasks, automate reminders, and enhance collaboration.

10. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly assess your workload and coping strategies. Adjusting your approach based on “what works best for you” can help in managing stress more effectively.

“By prioritising self-care and employing these strategies, you can turn challenges into opportunities for growth and success.”

Love your insights Andrew. Experience can teach us so much, if we choose to notice. And it's a privilege to be alongside you. I think we can all benefit from having someone to witness our thinking and encourage us to be who we really are. That's certainly true for me and it helps me to navigate life a little more gracefully ?? Having someone who listens, unconditionally and without judging is such a gift. Thank you so much for your kind words of appreciation and for recommending the Cards. It means such a lot ??
