How I Built a Full-Time Income with a Part-Time Business in Retirement

For context, you need to know that I had traditionally solid-plans to retire at age 50, supported by a profitable property business, living off the profits and rental income. Kerr-ching!

The plan was on track until the global financial crisis of 2008/2009 hit ??

It’s taken me 16 years to recover from that. In that time, while I did okay transitioning into Coaching & Consultancy work, but I wasn’t ‘thriving’.

I continued to work past my 65th birthday telling myself “I love what I do and don’t want to stop working”. But the truth was, I couldn’t afford to live on just a small state pension and a private pension that had taken a big hit in the previous decade.

Perhaps the biggest upside to continued working, is the opportunities that present themselves.

During a coaching session with a client, I asked him a question that sparked a solution in my own mind—something I hadn’t previously considered.

Within 3 months of that light-bulb moment, I had my own plan in place.

- My Solution

The plan I created is unique to me - that’s why it works for me. But, when I shared it with others, I noticed it worked for them too. This simple, stripped-back approach has helped others build successful part-time businesses that generate full-time incomes.

While there are a lot of moving parts to arrive at the simple solution required, here are my 3 Core principles to build a part-time business that pays full-time income without risking your savings or working more than 2 hours a day.

1. Find something you’re good at. Turning a personal passion or area of expertise into a business is a lot easier than finding a job that matches your interests.
2. Match it to a Hungry Market Whether it be a product or a service you offer, it needs to address an existing problem or improve upon current solutions for a hungry market.
3. Learn how to Monetise it. Once you’ve figured out steps 1 and 2, monetising becomes the easiest part.

Nothing will improve your retirement quite as much as a money-generating business that utilises these 3 simple steps.
