How I Build Client Relationships as a Copywriter & Video Marketer
When I started my business in 2019, I quickly learned that strong client relationships are everything. They keep things running smoothly and are the backbone of long-term success. So how do I build these connections? Here’s a peek into how I work with my clients and create relationships that last.
1. Actually Listening?
From the first conversation, I focus on listening. Instead of instantly rattling off solutions, I soak up my client’s full story. I want to understand their challenges, goals, and what’s driving them.
And thanks to my background in journalism, I know how to ask the right questions and pay attention to the details. This, of course, helps me build trust and sets the stage for the work ahead.?
2. Transparency from Day One
Being upfront is something I value. When I start working with a client, there are no surprises. We discuss timelines, deliverables, and pricing upfront, so everything is clear.?It makes working together easier and stress-free. My clients know they can count on me to keep them in the loop, and that creates a strong foundation of trust.
If your clients or customers don't feel valued, you’re missing the point of doing business.
3. Delivering More Than Expected
I don’t shy away from offering extra value to my clients. If I spot an area that could use improvement, I’m quick to offer suggestions. For example, if I’m creating social media content for a client but notice ways they could drive more traffic to their email list, I share my thoughts.?
The same goes for email marketing or sales page clients. If I see an opportunity to improve their social media or another part of their strategy, I’ll give them ideas to maximize their results.
A perfect example of this is with my website copywriting projects. In addition to writing the copy for their website, I also provide a brand messaging guide called the “Storytelling Meets Branding Guide.”?
It's a PDF that serves as a go-to resource for consistent, clear messaging across all of the brand’s content. It includes story starters and content ideas specifically for email marketing and social media. All of this shows my clients that I’m fully invested in their success.?
4. Flexibility
Every client’s schedule and workload are different, and I manage communication in a way that keeps things moving smoothly. For some, that may mean monthly meetings to stay on track, while others benefit from quarterly check-ins. This keeps everything progressing without overwhelming anyone or losing focus.
5. Personal Touches
I always pay attention to the small things my clients share with me. It could be an update about their business growth, a recent achievement, or even something personal they’ve mentioned. These aren’t throwaway details. They help me build stronger connections with my clients. It makes working together feel less transactional and more like a real partnership.
6. Staying Ahead of Trends
Staying updated on industry trends is a big part of how I make sure my clients stay relevant. I like to keep an eye on what’s happening in the market so I can bring new, creative strategies to the table. I love looking for new ways to help my clients adapt and grow. There’s a lot going on in marketing, so it's important to position them to succeed no matter what’s coming next.?
Let’s Work Together
If you’re looking for someone who can help you stand out with words or videos that sell, here’s how I can help.
1. Copywriting for websites, email marketing, social media, or sales pages.
2. Videography for Instagram Reels, TikTok's, brand story videos, or event videos.
3. Story-Seller’s Video Lab, an 8-week program for busy entrepreneurs who want to create sales-driven videos using their phone.
