How I Became a Debt-Free Pharmacist Entrepreneur at 36

Sometimes goals start in the silliest ways. You see, I didn't always dream of paying off my house before I turned 40, but a random conversation my husband told me about years ago planted that seed in my brain and I could never let it go. Let me explain.?

We both grew up in a small town in Wyoming. One day he overheard a conversation between his family and their friends, who paid off their house before they turned 40. And when he told me about that, it just clicked for me. Something about that goal stuck with me.?

All of a sudden I wasn’t happy about being a homeowner. I wanted to be a homeowner who paid off their house before the age of 40. And due to my upbringing, I felt like that was an achievable goal.?

Financial Lessons From My Dad

Growing up, my dad taught me how to manage money wisely. He gave me a weekly allowance for doing my chores, which I had to divide between three mason jars. One mason jar was to pay God, one was for me to spend on whatever I wanted as an 8-year-old, and one was to save for my future.?

So every week we would meet in the basement and he would pay me for the chores I did that week and I had to choose how to allocate it between the three mason jars. The only non-negotiable was to pay God 10% first, then fill the other two however I wanted.?

But my dad was smart. He said, Jamie, for every dollar that you put into savings, I'm going to double that, and we'll deposit it in the bank. So if you put $10 in the jar, I'll put in another $10. And I'm a smart cookie, and I love money. So from the beginning, I just wanted to save my money to make it grow.?

My dad helped me visualize that and see how I could grow it more quickly by putting it in the bank and not spending it on all the penny candy at the gas station that I loved to get with my sister and my friends.

My 6 Tips for Achieving Financial Freedom

My dad taught me to start saving early and not to spend all my money right out of the gate, which helped me immensely with my future financial choices. And all of this ultimately led to me becoming a debt-free 36-year-old pharmacist entrepreneur with over a million dollars in my savings accounts.?
