How I Beat Burnout While Growing My Business

59% of entrepreneurs are struggling with anxiety, and 63% with burnout.

It’s not all that surprising, right?

When I started my journey as an entrepreneur, I thought owning a business meant more money, time freedom, and better work-life balance.

While those rewards can come, they often follow sacrifices and challenges:

  • Not knowing how much revenue you'll generate

  • Shifting from an "employee" mindset to a "business owner" mindset
  • Battling imposter syndrome and inner critics

But realizing these three things helped me feel more in control and less anxious:

1. You are NOT your business.

Many of us tie our IDENTITIES to our business's success, especially solopreneurs who are, in many respects, the business.

2. Failure is a gift.

If you study success stories, you'll notice that icons, inventors, and movement-makers fail. But they fail REGULARLY. It's part of the process.

3. There is no “arrival.”

Goals are great, but thinking that a specific achievement will bring lasting fulfillment is a mistake.

There’s a term for it: Arrival Fallacy.

Personally, I fell into this trap in my corporate career. I thought the next achievement would bring a long-lasting sense of accomplishment.

The Master's Degree. Check.

The Senior / Manager title. Check.

The next big BONUS. Check.

And tbh, it never lasted.

I’ve fallen into this same trap as an entrepreneur, too.

I thought my first $10k month would bring stability and security. Then recurring $20k months. Then $30k, $40k, $50k.

Every time I hit a goal, the goalpost moves.

That sense of security I seek is always OUT OF REACH.

That’s the arrival fallacy in action.

When we realize this, we can disrupt the “if-then” thinking that drives it, get honest with ourselves about WHY we’re chasing WHAT we’re chasing, and start doing the real work we need inside to experience that ‘thing’ now.

These are a few perspectives that have genuinely helped me as not just a businessperson but a person.

I hope they help you, too.

No materialistic milestone can truly bring content meant. The goal post is always moved. Marching towards a purpose that is larger than life that can never be fulfilled in a lifetime seems to be doing the trick. Perhaps because it's a journey and never the destination. Impact on people helps feeling that deep joy :)

Failure is truly a gift. When I started seeing my “failures” as redirections, it truly changed the game for me. Failure is a teacher, an opportunity to learn from our mistakes. Missing the lesson is the true failure. Love this breakdown Shima!

If you study success, you'll get happy! But if you study failures, you'll learn so many things! We should accept failures, learn, and move on! Is holding onto failures giving you anything?
