We often like to talk about our good experiences but not the unpleasant ones. But experiences whether good or bad, they complete our life journey, our career journey and so on. There cannot be a person who has never had bitter experience especially during the onset of a career. What we share in our profiles, is just a summary of our achievements and not our pitfalls or our incomplete stories.
No matter how experienced we are, we all go through these situations on day-to-day basis. I remember, it was one of my facilitation day at one of the giant export companies. Even though I had a good experience, I always preferred to work thoroughly for my each session and all the activities I would plan to do with the employees. But still I was feeling little jittery.
I checked my system few times and not just that, I copied the content in couple of pen drives, in case suddenly my laptop doesn’t respond. Even if I knew it wouldn’t happen, but still I was trying to make sure of myself. Well, everything was in place.
The workshop began on time. Everything was going well. I started with full enthusiasm and the participants also got involved well in the initial activities. Soon I saw that one my colleague was making a video shoot of my session, which I wasn’t made aware of. For a second it disturbed me. It made me little nervous and upset. Just then I noticed another colleague of mine was making few observations on a sheet sitting in another corner. It actually distracted me and I was not at all comfortable in that situation.
During tea break, I saw them conversing something but they didn't share anything with me though it raised a few questions in my mind but I resumed and continued my session as planned. Their gestures made me feel awkward but had no choice but to let go.
I didn’t get a chance to know the exact feedback shared by the client, but was kept away from going to any other client. I was kept engaged with inhouse sessions. Rather, my other counterparts were sent to the external sessions.
Soon I understood the situation. When asked, my employer said, we didn't get mush satisfactory response from the client. It was hard for me to believe. As I felt dejected day by day, I started looking for opportunities. Just in two and a half months, I was called for a demo at one of the leading hospitals and things worked for me with 30% higher payment. I moved on with the great offer.
Coincidentally, on one of the days when I was walking inside the hospital, I met the HR person of the same export company and his obvious question was, “Madam you never came to conduct any other session with us? We waited for couple of months. We even requested your boss to organize few more sessions with you but there wasn’t any response”.
I just smiled and didn’t say much as I had already had my triumph. I went back to the training room with a confidence because it didn’t make any difference to me, rather, his words certainly made it clear that I was soing my best, its just that I wasn’t at the right place.
