An article on the misconception about humility written by Sharon Gibson.

The word humble is more biblical than we think. People have taken advantage of this act to oppress and have control over others. Humility is not a justification of one’s character and the only person who we should be expressing our humility to in all aspect of life is God.
Do not hide your intelligence because it would make someone else feel uncomfortable; that person should be polite enough to learn from you and must possess a teachable spirit. It takes a lot of courage to navigate through life where being humble according to the world’s definition, only gets you as far as others imagine. We wonder why people think those at the top are seemingly ruthless, direct or care less about others; well, that is not true, they just know the power of authenticity and speaking out.
Human beings love power and would seize every opportunity to feel it at the detriment of a person’s self-esteem, identity and confidence. Once you reach the highest level of self-awareness you would devalue the essence of humility. No matter how experienced, aged or wealthy someone is, we are all student of life and can learn from each other regardless of a person’s status quo thus, only God deserves our humility because he is all knowing and we know nothing in comparison to the wisdom he exudes.
The majority are torn apart in the name of humility; they walk and live in fear of mortal beings like themselves. As good as a person acts like they have control of life and things happening around them, they do not. As it has been biblically written ‘the race is not to the swift but time and chance happens to us all’. We just quit too early and lose touch of our identity when we do that, making it hard to fully be the best representation of ourselves.

We accept the unacceptable because we are trying to be humble, however, I would urge the world to use words such as respectful and polite in place of humble. For instance, I am polite enough to walk away from a situation that would be and is detrimental to my health both physically and mentally without any explanation, especially when the person’s intentions are malicious. In the case of being respectful; when someone has more experience in a field than I do, I would show respect to that person’s journey and politely ask for guidance but if any condescending behavior arises in the process, I would walk away with my esteem intact.
Unfortunately, society’s definition of being humble would tell you otherwise, on the other hand, it will do more harm than good to you in the long run. Always be willing to face the consequences for standing up for yourself and protecting your space because the reward is huge in the future.
Finally, my advice to you is to walk through this world owing every space, being respectful and polite but not humble. You owe your humility to just the divine, God.
