Whether you realize it or not, people pick up on something when you walk into a room. It could be good or bad. It could be excitement, hope, and joy, or worry, anxiety, and doubt.

Effective leadership consistently engages with humble reality checks. One of the best ways to be a valuable team member is to ask those around you how they feel when you’re around, how you can better serve, and some ways to boost your leadership.?

In Jim Collins’ bestselling book, Good to Great, he shares the secret of what separates great leaders from good leaders: Great leaders walk in genuine humility.

Ask team members on a regular basis how you can communicate more effectively and provide clearer encouragement. Give them permission to be honest and transparent because effective leadership is all about remaining a student. It requires a humble heart and a strong desire to see people become all that they were created to be. Take a practical step this week and ask a team member these questions.

Demand honesty and be willing to accept that honesty without taking it too personally. I know this takes a level of authenticity and courage, but by now you have enough awareness and practical tools to take this important step.

Can you imagine if each and every team member committed to this level of transparency and honesty on a regular basis with no fear of judgment?

You might be thinking, “Ok Robb, but what about team evaluation?”

For personal, team, and organizational evaluation, I encourage people to use the SWOT analysis (or SWOT matrix). SWOT is a strategic planning technique used to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to business competition and project planning.

I’ve found that taking the SWOT, both personally and organizationally, is one of the best things a team member can do. Implementing it on a quarterly basis can provide the alignment your team needs to focus and follow through together.

  • Fill out the SWOT and prioritize the items in each box.?
  • Come back and discuss it as a group.?
  • Then ask for real results and compare.?
  • Discuss lessons learned and decide on one area of focus for the next 3 months.?
