My Journey Towards Holacracy
Over my seven-year tenure in management, I have come to love the philosophy of leading leaders and empowering team members to shape their work environment and opportunities. This approach was inspired by my late father, who taught me that being a manager was much more than dictating daily tasks—it's about equipping your team to achieve the organization's goals. After taking on a new Waffle House location in Richmond, it became clear that while the staff lacked vision and direction, they were eager for change. My goal was to implement a mixture of Holacracy, aiming to enhance customer experiences, thereby increasing server tips and cook bonuses through sales.
What is Holacracy?
Holacracy is a method of decentralized management and organizational governance, in which authority and decision-making are distributed throughout a holarchy of self-organizing teams rather than being vested at the top. This system allows for clear structures yet offers each team member autonomy in their roles, which encourages innovation and accountability.
Why Holacracy at Waffle House?
Waffle House is uniquely positioned to integrate aspects of holacracy because all employees have the opportunity to become part-owners through privately held stock ownership, one of the best benefits to working at Waffle House! This ownership, paired with bonuses and incentives provided by Waffle House to reward team member that are helping raise sales, helps create a perfect opportunity for team members to drive changes that they believe will improve our location.
Implementing a Holacratic Approach
While not introducing this new system overnight, I began by emphasizing our role as owners and initiated thought experiments to shift our mindset toward a more holacratic framework. I posed questions to the team such as:

These discussions spurred creativity and responsibility, leading to remarkable changes within just two months. Sales increased by nearly 8%, and we launched three staff-conceptualized events set to boost summer sales further. ON top of that our Google reviews soared, making us the third highest-ranked Waffle House in Richmond with a 4.0-star rating and its only going up!
Reflections and Results
The shift towards holacracy has not only improved our operational metrics but also invigorated the team. By decentralizing decision-making, staff members feel more valued and empowered, directly translating into their daily interactions with customers and their overall job satisfaction. This transformation underscores that while I could have dictated changes and orchestrated improvements individually, the collective involvement led to more sustainable and impactful results.

Holacracy isn't for every organization, but many, including ours, can reap significant benefits from integrating its principles. This journey has taught us the power of empowering employees and the positive ripple effects it can create across the business. As we continue to adapt and evolve, I encourage other industry professionals to consider how a blend of traditional and holacratic methods could benefit their operations.
