How To Hire for Attitude

Knowing how to hire for attitude will help you hire a star rather than a Grinch.  Hiring the right person means that you will have to rank attitude just as high, if not higher than skill.  It's not that technical skills are not important it's just easier to assess technical skills.

Asking new kinds of interview questions can provide real information about attitude.  Just a few questions can help you determine if you are hiring the right attitude for your organization.  We call these types of questions "behavioral interview questions".  You want to find out how candidates handle themselves in difficult situations.

Here are some questions to ask during your next interview:                                                      

1.   When was the last time you expressed disagreement with your manager?  How did you respond?

2.  When was the last time someone gave you constructive feedback?  Did you find it helpful?  What did you do in response to that feedback?

3.  When was the last time your organization made a decision that you did not agree with?  How did you handle that situation?

4.  When was the last time you did something to impact your organizations bottom line in a positive way? 

5.  What was the last personal development you went through?  What was your reason for going through this development?  (Were they asked to by their organization or did they recognize the opportunity on their own).

Listen carefully to how the candidates handled various situations.  It's a good idea to have an answer key to your questions to understand how you would like the ideal candidate to respond. 

Also, ask for referrals from those employees that possess the attitude you are looking for.  Networking is one of the best ways to hire right.  The hiring process can be a slow one but hiring the right candidate is worth the time it takes.
