How To Help Your People Through The Emotional Side of Change

How To Help Your People Through The Emotional Side of Change

While looking at the beautiful Sydney skyline, I had a thought about how to help your people through the emotional side of the change process - if you have any mergers acquisitions, restructures that sort of thing, that’s going on in your business.

The City of Sydney has been here, ever evolving, ever changing for 200 years.

But the city has had the Harbour Bridge for the last 80 years, and the Opera house since the 60s

These are big landmarks that you know you're looking around the Harbour and you see them, find your bearings and think, “Oh yeah this Sydney. This is my city.”

And so when you’ve got a change process going in your business you have to make sure you give your people some "landmarks" to emotionally hang on to.

Then they can say "Great, this is still the same place.”

So if you've got a big merger, acquisition or restructure going on, if you've got a big "realignment" going on, make sure you give your people some landmarks to hang on to.

Make sure you book the Annual Christmas Party book way in advance exactly the same way you've done it for the last five years.

And make sure your Monday morning meeting is still on Monday morning at the same time with the same people in it.

Make sure you hang a few decorations, pieces of art or furniture that we're in the old place up in the new place.

Just make sure you give people a great big Harbour Bridge or a big Opera House that they can see that things might be evolving but this is the same place they've always known and loved.

Love your analogy Marty Wilson! Landmarks are part of an organisation’s cultural artefacts and help support and sustain people as they navigate change. Important to remember that ensuring employees know and understand the WHY of change is key to success... “When humans know the ‘why’ of something they can stand almost any ‘how’.
