Is is difficult to get your elderly parent to eat their daily dose of fruits and vegetables every day? You're not alone—many elderly individuals just don't eat enough of these nutritious foods. AgingCare shares a few easy ways to whip up fruit and veggie dishes that will have your loved one coming back for seconds!
1. Add veggies to other tasty dishes.
If your elderly parent simply doesn't like the taste of vegetables, they may not enjoy eating a side dish of broccoli or kale. Instead, try incorporating these vegetables into meals that they already love. For example, add pieces broccoli into a creamy beef stroganoff, or add kale into a flavorful noodle stir fry.
2. Get creative with dessert.
If your elderly parent just can't seem to satisfy their sweet tooth, try preparing desserts that are fruit-based. AgingCare shares a wonderful way to make delicious "ice cream" with just bananas alone: peel ripe bananas, cut them up and put them in your freezer for a few hours, and blend them when you're ready to serve. It's the perfect sweet treat without any added sugars!
3. For snacks, try a green smoothie.
This method is an easy way for your elderly parent to get a dose of antioxidants! Not only do green smoothies taste great, but they also are great for those who may have trouble chewing their food. A handful of spinach, diced mangoes, and kiwi into your blender along with a little bit of water and you have a delicious green smoothie in minutes.
