As the first line of response, social workers are well placed to help curb Child Abandonment through prevention measures that are available within the Child Protection systems. So as a?social worker, how can you empower or help new mothers?
Here are five things you can do to help prevent Child Neglect/ Abandonment as a social worker :
* Work with maternity units - this helps equip health practitioners with guidance on preventing child abandonment at hospital maternity units
* Use of Early Warning Systems (EWS) and Case Management tools - this effectively helps identify the root causes and generate data for interventions, such as counseling, healthcare, etc.
* Help enroll new mothers in social assistance programs - by identifying the social assistance programs that specifically address their specific needs that are already available in the community
?* Family planning services - one of the leading reasons for Child Neglect/ Abandonment is unplanned and early pregnancies, family planning services for women and girls who are at risk are important
* Counseling and ‘parent training’ services for new mothers and their whole families so they can better prepare and care for vulnerable children
There is so much more we can all do, but this is a good place to start and help make a difference in your day-to-day.
