How health care will transform in 2023
If we’ve learned one lesson from our ongoing journey with COVID-19, it's that health care is constantly transforming.?The pandemic brought about new challenges to an industry that was already experiencing significant change. These new realities have shown us that we must expand how and where we provide care, giving our patients and our caregivers new choices in access to care and delivery of care.?
In 2022, we saw the loss of some of the initial traction in virtual care and other innovative care models. As we move into 2023, we must continue to innovate, providing more care “outside the traditional four walls” and moving closer toward home-based care.?We must create care models that deliver the right care in the right place at the right cost and the right time aligned with outcomes consistent with what matters most to our patients.
Realistically, the biggest factor influencing the future of most health care systems is financial stability. How we solve for that equation and how we sustain long-term financial sustainability is critical. It will take a different mindset and strategic and tactical planning for a transformative future rather than relying on the same strategies and tactics from the past. This will differentiate the winners from the rest of the pack.
To achieve financial stability, we need to transform our approach to portfolio, programs, service lines, investments, partnerships, and advocacy, providing a clear path to the future.?
Many of the barriers brought on by the pandemic will persist for the foreseeable future. The severe workforce shortage facing all health care systems tops the list. This, coupled with caregiver burnout, creates a significant barrier to delivering the world-class care every patient and community deserves. We must find alternatives and inventive ways to build the workforce for the future, while simultaneously prioritizing the needs of our caregivers.
