Wrote this guide to navigating the Fediverse since a whole lot of folx have recently joined. I joined 2.2.2023 during the Great Twitter Migration. As someone who intentionally chooses where to post online, I offer you the same information I posted on Mastodon (in case you are new / considering joining us there). Thanks! Share to help others :)
New here? Suggestions for enjoying your time in the Fediverse (1 of 2)
What: make the Fediverse a fun and engaging place to be
How: follow people who have interesting work, hobbies, posts that entertain / inform you
Better yet: comment what you have in common, what you like about the person you followed/allowed to follow you (always screen requests)
Best practices: interact with people! This is a community so you can
a. like (use the star) you show them you favourited their post (shows appreciation)
b. reply (back button) which starts a thread; you can also reply back privately (DM)
c. boost (circular arrows) shows you resonate with the post You'll often see posts that say "boost for reach" -- you help spread good ideas while supporting the OP; also shows folx who view your profile or follow you what you're into
hot take: toot or boost good content instead of just ranting about politics, news, etc. my definition of good: fun, funny, cute (cats & capybaras, hello), informative posts

Fill out your profile with some info, a pic & header image; allows people to know you, what interests you so they can intentionally follow/friend you :)
Who/What to Follow: this influences your home feed, so follow who's interesting to you Curate your follows so you have a great time here!
When someone starts posting things you're not interested it, you can a. mute (keep following them but no longer see what they post, temporarily if you like) b. unfollow (removes them so you no longer see their posts) c. use filters (they're fun and keep you emotionally regulated)
What Else?
1. If you need help, reach out or post and people will reply coz they're nice
2. check out my profile for ideas on what to put on your profile
3. post an introduction using a hashtag so people can find you, welcome you, say hi
IMHO we're in the greatest online space ever so thanks
for being here (on Fedi)
PS
boost for reach
