How has the Russia-Ukraine War Affected the E-Mobility sector in the UK and EU?

E-mobility

E-mobility means any vehicle that is partly or fully electric. It is a smart technology evolution, opening the ways for cities to become smarter. To add further, it is one of the best solutions to promote sustainability and cope with the challenges of the climate crisis because of reduced transportation emissions as produced by petrol and diesel-based vehicles. The e-mobility industry accounts for more than 4% of GDP and is a significant source of employment for about 700,000 people across the UK. To this extent, there is no denying the fundamental significance of the electric-mobility industry because the future of automotive is electric.?

In 2013, the UK produced 1.6 million electric commercial vehicles. The economy of the UK is different from the EU, but they are strongly related. The EU has given 3.5 billion pounds to the UK for the innovation of its automotive industry.

In addition to its popularity worldwide, it is not without its challenges. The major challenge it has to face during its development is the Russia-Ukraine war.?

Ukraine-Russia War and The E-Mobility sector

On 24 Feb 2022, Russia made a large-scale invasion in Ukraine and marched the borders of Ukraine with approx. 150,000 troops. At that time, the world's economy was on the way to its recovery and getting back to its initial strong position after the pandemic.?

But this attack not only affected the economy of Ukraine and Russia but the neighbouring European countries like Moldova, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Romania; the UK is no exception. Beyond the human tragedy and death toll, this also affected the e-mobility sector in the UK and various European countries because of their severe dependence on Russia for the sake of raw materials and energy necessary for the advancement of electric vehicles.

E-Mobility sector and Russia Trade Sanctions

Everyone is trying to prevent the e-mobility sector from war consequences. And to stop Russia from attacking Ukraine, various energy suppliers have stopped the energy supply to Russia. Likewise, they have cut off any kind of trade with Russia to make Russia isolated and weaken its economy. Consequently, this has resulted in supply chain constraints; lesser availability of raw materials for the production of electric vehicles.

If the conflict continues and additional sanctions are imposed against Russia, the automotive sector will see more disruption and delays in the UK, EU, and worldwide.??

E-Mobility Manufacturers and The Ukraine-Russia war

Many electric-mobility manufacturers have stopped the manufacturing of electric mobility vehicles across Europe and the UK due to the banned import of necessary car components resulting from the Ukraine-Russia war. Some of them are:

BMW: The Munich premium brand is stopping BMW manufacturing at UK and German factories as it is facing supply chain issues.

Jaguar Land Rover: the sanctions imposed by the EU, US, and the UK are making it difficult for JLR to sell its cars in the market.?

Audi: it has paused the production of A4, A5, and A7 in the EU due to the Ukraine-Russian war.

MINI: its production at the firm's Oxford Factory in the UK has also been affected due to a shortage of components.

Skoda: Skoda has reportedly paused the production of Fabia, Karoq, Superb, and Kodiaq, according to automotive logistics.

VW: the German Firm has stopped the production of VW ID3, ID4, and Cupra Born electric cars at Zwickau and Dresden factories, facing difficulties in delivering electric cables from Ukraine.?

E-mobility Challenges Accompanied by Ukraine-Russia War Conflict

Russia is the primary source of palladium and the world's foremost producer of it. It is also the world's third largest supplier of nickel, while Ukraine is the first largest supplier of neon, supplying 70% of the world's total neon. The drop in the production and supply of these three critical raw materials significantly affects the production of catalytic converters, semiconductor chips, and electric vehicle batteries. Further, there is,

Increased Prices- The Ukraine-Russia war resulted in a delay in the production of electric vehicles and eventually, increased prices in the UK and EU.?These higher costs can dampen sales and uptake levels. Meanwhile, PV automakers who export Kia, Toyota, Renault, Volkswagen, and Hyundai from Russia face their battles. Before the crisis, the total monthly sale of these major OEM brands accounted for approx. three-fourths of total PV sales in Russia.

Trade Restriction- As the abides grow, and companies suspend or withdraw operations in Russia, the country's electric-mobility operations face a long-term risk. Also, this leaves a long-term impact on the industry of electric mobility in the UK and EU.?

Production Disability- The Ukraine-Russia war has highlighted the urgent need for various strategies that contain immediate to short-term production techniques to effectively manage the people's demand for electric vehicles and their supply.?

Effect of the Russian-Ukraine war

From the beginning of 2022 as yet, the brutality of the Ukraine-Russia war has brought many unfortunate consequences for the e-mobility industry. Some are given below;

·????????Share prices of e-mobility automakers with significant operations are dropping day by day. This situation puts additional pressure on gross margins, which have fallen from 8 to 6% for the past six quarters.?

·????????Affected players include BMW, VW, Honda, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz Daimler, Land Rover, Nissan, and Ford.?

·????????VW, Hyundai, and Toyota in the Czech Republic; Peugeot, Audi, Land Rover, Seat, Skoda, Porsche, Kia, VW in Slovakia; Ford, VW, and Stellantis in Poland; and Stellantis in Berallus production is also disrupted across eastern Europe.

·????????The Ukraine-Russia war further results in supply chain blockages and a shortage of semiconductors that are already present in limited amounts.?

·????????The shortage will continue to increase upward pressure on used car prices, causing an increase in gas prices and interest rates, resulting in a raised cost of vehicle ownership. Due to the Russian-Ukraine war, vehicle demand is significantly dropping daily.?

Summary

All the above-mentioned key facts present a clear picture of the negative impacts of the Ukraine-Russia war on the e-mobility sector. Although it is a fact that this has badly affected the world's economy, at the same time e-mobility industry that makes a notable contribution to the economy is not apart from its consequences.

The government entities' fundamental involvement in putting pressure on Russia to end the war with Ukraine would is an integral initiative on the one hand. But on the other hand, there is a dire need to take more stringent, result-oriented measures on this account; otherwise, the e-mobility industry will continue to face an even more severe downfall.??
