???Sparking Innovation: Victoria GovJam Unleashes Creativity in Public Service!
Recently, Button’s very own Jaimie Park co-facilitated the Victoria GovJam, a creative design sprint as part of the Global GovJam movement! Cities worldwide tackled the same secret theme with participants diving in from diverse public sector backgrounds—service designers, IT experts, policy advisors, and more.
GovJam offered a rare chance to step outside the usual, enabling public sector professionals to collaborate with peers from completely different fields. The mantra? “Doing, not talking!”
Teams didn’t just talk about solutions—they showed value through action, moving ideas from paper to 3D interactive prototypes over an exciting two days.
Just like a hackathon, the GovJam process involved:
?? Understanding the problem.
??♀? Hitting the streets for real-world research.
?? Generating big ideas.
?? Prototyping with a sense of play.
With phrases like “Yes, and” leading the way, participants embraced creative problem-solving and explored how much is possible in public services when collaboration, openness, and playful experimentation are the game's rules. Participants navigated the full journey of team formation—forming, storming, norming, and performing—while discovering the magic of design thinking.
At Button, we’re proud to celebrate events like GovJam that inspire innovation in public services. Here’s to bringing imagination and creativity to everything we do in 2025!

What We’re Reading: ”The Service Organization: How to deliver and lead successful services,” sustainably, by Kate Tarling
In The Service Organization, Kate Tarling argues that most organizations, including those in the public sector, aren’t structured to deliver end-to-end services effectively. She offers practical insights and tools to address underlying organizational challenges, advocating for a shift in governance, leadership, and operational structures.
By reimagining services from the customer's perspective, Tarling emphasizes the need for a holistic transformation, not just isolated service improvements. The book provides actionable steps that anyone, from designers to policymakers, can use to drive meaningful change. It’s filled with real-world examples of organizations successfully reinventing themselves to focus on delivering better, more integrated services.
