How to Be Happy at Work: 10 simple strategies

It’s said that there’s no formula for happiness, but there are ways to increase your happiness — and your performance — at work. Here are ten you can begin using today.

1. There is no such thing as "work-life balance"

Work-life balance is an illusion. Everyone wants it. Everyone claims to have it. No one actually does.

Instead of chasing this impossible goal, think of your work and your life as inseparable. Every moment of the day should be a moment you enjoy.

When you love what you do, you’ll feel motivated to do more, and your workday will fly by.

2. Do your best work first

Start your day with something important. Do the thing that energises you, the project that truly brings you joy.

Value your time. The first few hours of your day are the ones you should spend contributing to the world in the most meaningful way.

3. Feel your feelings

Don’t be afraid to share your honest, unfiltered opinion. Bring your personality to work. Ask questions. Ask lots of questions. What are you really excited about? What are you really upset about?

If you feel something, say it. This simple act can make a great impact at work.

4. Have a side hustle

Having a side gig improves creativity, productivity and happiness.

5. Set boundaries

You’ll be surprised at how much more time you’ll have when you no longer spend it worrying about things you can't control.

6. Exercise

Being physically active improves mental well-being and releases feel-good endorphins. Don’t make excuses. Just do it!

7. Be social

You don’t need an excuse to get out from behind your computer and make human connections. Strike up a conversation with a colleague on the way to the elevator. Make time for coffee with a friend. Ask for help.

8. Say no

What’s most important to you? What brings you the most meaning and fulfillment? Focus and prioritise your time around these.

9. Get enough sleep

Not getting enough sleep impairs your ability to think, make decisions and cope with stress.

10. Don’t take yourself too seriously

Taking yourself less seriously will make you happier and more productive.
