How to be Happier in Thirty Days

How to be Happier in Thirty Days

My friend Marshall Goldsmith was coaching the former head of the World Bank when he asked the World Bank leader a question: “Did you try to be happy today?” The leader said, “It has never occurred to me to TRY to be happy.”

This response from one of the world’s most intelligent people echoes a common belief many of us have about happiness, which is that happiness just happens! In this article I want to talk about how we can become happier and we can learn how to coach happiness in others.

I also want to invite you to join my latest online course that will run for six weeks starting on April 13: The Habits of Happy People: How you can become happier and coach it in others. Click to learn more.

It is true that few of us have ever had any “training” on how to actively manage our own happiness nor have we as managers ever learned how to coach people to be happier. Over the last two decades, there has been a growing mountain of research studying the “science” of happiness to discover the habits and practices of happy people.

Happiness is serious business. Most of us have “being happy” as one of the main goals of our lives. Happiness also has a big impact on work performance. Research shows that airline pilots who are in a good mood make fewer mistakes and medical practitioners who are happy make better diagnosis. Teams filled with happy people perform better, provide better service and have stronger collaborative relationships. Parents who are happy are better parents. You get the idea, being happy and being able to coach happiness is critical to business success.

As many of you know, I have been a student of happiness for some time and wrote two bestselling books on the subject: The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die and The Five Thieves of Happiness.

Today I want to give you one of the secrets to being happier. This habit is so simple you can start doing it today. At the end of every day, take a few moments and ask what made today a happy day and what made it a less happy day. Then ask, “What is one small change I want to make tomorrow?”?When you start your next day, remind yourself what you noticed. Try this for thirty days.
