How to Handle ZoomInfo Legal Notices??

ZoomInfo (ZI) sends legal notice when they detect users using their data after the subscription period. Many people have approached us in the past for consultation.??

Is ZoomInfo right to do so???

ZI treats the platform and data as a subscription based product. Therefore, it is sold to users as a subscription service, which is not on a perpetual license. Users sign an agreement to use it on a subscription basis and not share the data after it ends.??

ZI is right (in their own way) to send you the legal notice.??

Why is ZI doing it ???♂?

  1. They want to bring data to a subscription model.
  2. This can help them sell renewals.
  3. In case the user is enterprise or funded company, they negotiate the penalty to be paid, - which is a hefty amount.
  4. They do establish themselves as a brand.

How Do You Settle It ???

Case A. Negotiate hard if you renew the license: Pay the renewal fee if you are happy with ZI data and it fits your GTM strategy. You are not on the weak side. Focus on negotiating the price and other items that you would like. ZI has been known to give good deals.??

Case B. Do not need their data for this year

  1. If you are not renewing, you need to check their seriousness. ZI stopped bothering them after 2 months when users do not respond to these emails. This is generally the case for small deal sizes.??
  2. If ZI hands it over to the collection agency after 2-3 months, you still have not lost much. You can negotiate with the collection agency aggressively.??

CEO of a b2b SaaS company told me that they took the bare minimum subscription for another year.

Pointing a customer to Ransom money seems to be a bad business practice Vinay Mehendi, PhD. Popular products like Microsoft office or Netflix send u subscription reminder and if u don't renew they cancel the subscription. Pointing a gun to a customer seems to be a terrible business practice. I am shocked how come there is no Social Media outrage.
