You’ve probably noticed that in recent years, ending the working relationship between an employee and a company has become more common. If we look at the experiences of older generations, we see that their reality was quite different from ours: lifelong jobs, limited opportunities for promotion or long-term development, and strong emotional ties between employee and employer.
However, today’s work environment is defined by a single word: instability. We face precarious jobs or project-based work, little to no severance pay depending on the country and situation, frequent job changes, and a decline in loyalty on both sides. This instability often leads to contract terminations, and we must recognize that even when leaving a job voluntarily, it carries emotional implications. Leaving behind colleagues, projects, and the comfort of a familiar routine can be difficult.
If we are dismissed, regardless of the reason, we go through a grieving process or emotional adjustment. This happens even when the employer or manager explains the economic reasons, making it clear that the decision isn’t personal. When we first hear the news, it’s natural for our minds to be flooded with thoughts: Why me? Couldn’t this have been avoided? We may recall all the contributions we made and the dedication we showed, only to realize they no longer hold any weight in this bitter moment.
It’s common to experience these thoughts, but when we receive news of a dismissal, it’s important to stay calm and use emotional intelligence. By doing so, we can present ourselves as professionals who can handle frustration and stress. This approach helps ensure that future references from the company will be positive.
While it’s normal to have negative thoughts, it’s important not to focus on them too much after leaving the company. Instead, focus on the new opportunities that, although unexpected, could lead to even greater success. Concentrate on what you learned and enjoyed, because concentrating on negative aspects will only lead to mental blocks, stress and instability.
Everyone handles this new chapter differently, depending on their personal situation and responsibilities. However, after leaving the company, it’s crucial to maintain the professional attitude we mentioned earlier. Remember that the people around us are our strongest support system, so we should avoid burdening them with our frustrations or making them feel affected by our circumstances.
Even though we can lean on our loved ones for support, we must understand that we alone are responsible for dealing with this new situation. The time spent lamenting this professional setback is time lost in focusing on finding a new job.

To embark on this journey toward a new position, we first need to restore our mental stability and, most importantly, our self-esteem. This will allow us to concentrate on what we want and need for our future: the type of companies we see ourselves working for, where we’d like to work, and the role we want in this new stage of our career.
Regarding self-esteem, it’s necessary to remember that it’s a fundamental part of achieving and maintaining our mental balance. This balance doesn’t just affect our job search but every aspect of our lives. If we feel we need to boost our self-esteem, there are plenty of free resources available online—articles, quotes, workshops, books, etc. These resources can help us feel stronger and more motivated for the new challenges ahead.
As a tip, I would say that in times of change, it's important to use this period as an opportunity for personal growth. Consider taking online courses, attending workshops, or even reading books that can help you develop new skills or improve existing ones. By investing in your personal development, not only will you keep your mind engaged, but you’ll also enhance your resume and become a more attractive candidate for future opportunities.?
And don’t forget that one of the most overlooked ways to manage the stress of a job dismissal is through physical activity. Whether it’s walking, running, yoga, or any other form of exercise, staying active can significantly boost your mood and energy levels.
Finally, after going through this process of personal and mental rebuilding, we’ll reach a point where we can look beyond the setback, finding the strength to move forward.
So, stay positive during this challenging time. Remember that a proactive and positive attitude, combined with the right tools, will surely speed up your job search and very likely lead you to an even better position than before.
